Berwick-upon-Tweed Barracks and Main Guard

Description

Berwick-upon-Tweed Barracks and Main Guard, English Heritage is working with partners including the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, The Maltings Trust and Northumberland County Council on a project to transform Berwick Barracks into a thriving cultural hub.

The British government had them built between 1717 and 1721, as part of a programme of barrack-building in the north of England and in Scotland, following the fighting there during the Jacobite rising of 1715. The barracks were designed for a full regiment of infantry, whose initial purpose was to deter and stop any further uprisings in the North.
