Features

  • Things to see and do: There’s plenty to enjoy during a day out at Lindisfarne Priory. From exploring the ruins to enjoying the museum, reflecting on modern-day art that responds to the site, and taking on the family-friendly trail, there’s lots to do for visitors of all ages. Below, we include a few of the must-see treasures for visitors to Lindisfarne Priory.
  • Explore the priory: Lindisfarne was one of the most important centres of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England for more than a century. Then it was abandoned, after the infamous Viking raid of AD 793.
  • Discover the museum: Head to the museum to discover rare Christian and Anglo-Saxon artefacts. Look out for Britain’s earliest-known prayer bead necklace, a beautiful Anglo-Saxon gaming counter and fragments of a knitted woollen sleeve, one of the earliest surviving examples of knitting in Europe.
  • See the monument to St Cuthbert: St Cuthbert is one of England’s most famous saints, and his shrine at Lindisfarne was a site of Anglo-Saxon pilgrimage and miracles. Now, more than 1,300 years after his death, a monument marks the site of his original burial place, welcoming pilgrims.
  • Immerse yourself in art and poetry: Olivia Lomenech-Gill, artist and the illustrator of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, has created a large-scale, mixed-media artwork in response to The 'Refuge Box', a poem by Katrina Porteous. The poem uses the wooden refuge box on Holy Island causeway to consider ideas of sanctuary. You can scan a QR code to listen to a recording of the poem as you wander through the priory ruins.
  • Discover magical creatures: Looking for an adventure with your little ones? Uncover English folklore with our Folktale Creature Trails, where children can discover magical creatures from English myths and legends.
  • Browse the shop: Lindisfarne Priory's refurbished shop has a new range of stained-glass-inspired clothing and accessories, exclusive to English Heritage.
  • Museum: The museum explores the story of St Cuthbert and the 1300 year history of Lindisfarne Priory. The collection includes the Viking Raiders Stone, depicting the Viking raid on Lindisfarne in 793.
