Description

The Lindisfarne Centre is the perfect starting point for exploring Holy Island of Lindisfarne. It introduces visitors to the island’s rich history, heritage and community life through engaging exhibitions and displays. Located on Marygate near the entrance to the village, it helps you plan your visit and make the most of your time on the island.

Inside, you’ll find interactive exhibitions about the famous Lindisfarne Gospels, including a facsimile of this national treasure and insights into how the monks created it. Learn about the dramatic Viking raid of AD793, see a Viking raider display, and discover stories from islanders about local life and nature. There are children’s games and activities, along with a well-stocked gift shop offering local books, crafts, jewellery, maps and souvenirs. Knowledgeable staff are available to provide tips on where to go, eat and stay.

Ticket prices are affordable, with adults at £4, concessions at £3.50, children aged 5–15 at £2 and under 5s free. A family ticket for two adults and two or more children costs £10, making it good value for families exploring the island.

Open daily from mid-March to the end of October between 10am and 4:30pm, the centre is easy to find near the start of the village. It’s an informative and welcoming place that brings Lindisfarne’s fascinating past to life and helps visitors experience the island safely and confidently.

Facilities

Parking: Parking in the village is restricted and tourists are advised against driving beyond the council-operated visitor car park (pay and display, charges apply). This is located on the left hand side of the road on the approach to the village.
Souvenir and Gift Shop: The Souvenir and Gift Shop at the Lindisfarne Centre stocks a comprehensive range of local books, maps, greetings cards, postcards, toys, knitted items, local art, handicrafts, jewellery, mugs, glassware and stationery.
Toilets: Toilets are for use by paying visitors to the exhibition.

Getting on to Holy Island safely: For those people who wish to use the Lindisfarne Causeway road to access (or return from) Holy island, safe crossing times are provided on Northumberland County Council's website. The times should be treated with caution, as local weather conditions (such as high wind) can change them. Always allow 30 minutes extra time to compensate for these variables.
There is also a marked walking route over the sands/mud, however, if you intend to use this route, please do it during daylight hours with someone who has local knowledge and NEVER CROSS DURING A RISING TIDE. You should therefore aim to have completed this walk BEFORE the mid-point of the safe-to-cross time period.
Directions to the Lindisfarne Centre: Walk into the village from the car park, straight on at the junction, past the Oasis cafe. Turn right and you will find the The Lindisfarne Centre on the left hand side.
