Floors Castle

Description

Welcome to Floors Castle, the centrepiece of the beautiful Roxburghe Estate since it was constructed for my ancestor, the 1st Duke of Roxburghe, over 300 years ago. The castle continues to be a beloved home to my family and I, and it is possible for visitors to see the evolution of Floors through the changes made by successive generations to the castle and gardens.

Our 300th Anniversary exhibition remains on display in the castle, and there are a host of exciting events and activities planned for what we all hope will be a busy and enjoyable year. Just a short walk from the castle, you will find the spectacular Victorian Walled Gardens with glasshouses, herbaceous borders and a formal Millennium Garden. There are also waymarked woodland and riverside walks to explore, along with a cycle trail suitable for the whole family, Floors has so much to discover.

Price starts from £3.00 per person for Autumn/Winter Walled Garden Only Ticket. If you are looking for Best place for day out with kids and families then this is the perfect destination offering fun, adventure, and unforgettable memories for everyone.

Features

  • Floors Castle: Floors Castle is the largest inhabited house in Scotland and was opened to the public by the 10th Duke in 1977. It remains an iconic piece of Scottish architecture and as a dwelling, has few rivals in the UK. Whilst it is a visitor attraction, first and foremost, it is a beloved family home to the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe.
  • Family Tree: It is possible that the Roxburghe family blood line in Britain began with two brothers, Ralph and John, originally from Normandy, who passed from England into Scotland in the 13th century. This laid the foundations for the two houses, the descendants of Ralph, the Ker line, Marquesses of Lothian, and the descendants of John being the Kers of Cessford.
  • Walled Garden: The 4 acre walled garden is a showpiece of seasonal colour and interest. The glasshouses date from the 1850’s and the Victorian tradition of growing tender plants and fruits continues today. A Tapestry garden has been created with a mix of meandering paths, hidden corners and other features to explore.
  • Millennium Garden: This lovely formal garden with its French-style parterre was created to commemorate the new millennium and features the intertwining initials of the 10th Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe. The roman numerals MM in box hedging signify the year 2000 and flank the ducal coronet. On the upper terrace are varieties of heritage apple trees trained in a variety of styles highlighting pruning techniques.
  • Walks and Cycle Trails: The two walks on the Estate provide an opportunity for you to enjoy one of the most beautiful landscapes in Scotland and our cycle trail allows you to do this on two wheels.
  • Star Plantation: This beautiful woodland garden between Floors Castle and the Millennium Garden is a joy to explore with its lovely mix of mature hardwood trees, open glades and woodland shrubs. The star plantation takes its name from the grass avenues radiating outwards from a central lime tree which features a delightful wrought iron seat.

Facilities

  • Parking: There are free public car parks available at the woodland car park adjacent to the castle, and at the gardens. There is limited parking available for camper vans/caravans and coaches.
