Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum may look like a grand castle from the outside, but inside it reveals the story of a 19th-century prison. Built in the 1820s on the site of the old medieval castle and town gallows, it was once known as a “model prison.” Today, it offers visitors a fascinating and sometimes spooky insight into historic prison life and the history of Jedburgh.
Visitors can explore original cell blocks, learn about former prisoners and discover why some once called it “the most comfortable jail in Scotland.” The Jailer’s House contains the town museum, showcasing Jedburgh’s history, traditions and notable figures such as Mary Somerville, David Brewster and James Veitch. Children can enjoy dressing up and hands-on activities, and paranormal investigations and overnight events are also available.
Entry to Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum is free, with donations encouraged to help support and improve the visitor experience.
With free parking, family-friendly exhibits and panoramic views over the town, it makes for an engaging day out in the Scottish Borders. Whether you’re interested in prison history, local heritage or ghostly tales, there’s something here for all ages. It’s a unique attraction combining history, storytelling and a memorable setting.
