Description

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway offers a nostalgic steam train journey across the beautiful landscapes of Exmoor. Departing from Woody Bay Station, this heritage railway recreates the magic of the original narrow-gauge line first opened in 1898. Visitors can enjoy a traditional steam experience while taking in views of rolling countryside, wild moorland and rugged coastline.

The railway currently operates a one-mile trip from Woody Bay Station to Killington Lane and back, covering two miles in total and lasting around 20 minutes. Passengers travel in carefully rebuilt heritage carriages inspired by the original Victorian designs. The project is part of an ongoing effort to restore one of the world’s most famous and picturesque narrow-gauge railways, with restored locomotives, authentic rolling stock and a welcoming station atmosphere.

Standard fares are £11.50 for adults, £8.50 for students and young adults (14–21), and children under 14 travel free. A family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 young adults) costs £32.00, while pre-booked group rates are £9.50 per person. Annual memberships range from £12 for juniors to £125 for corporate membership, and life memberships start from £300 for seniors and £500 for individuals.

With its authentic steam trains, scenic Exmoor views and carefully restored heritage carriages, The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway provides a charming step back in time. It’s a perfect outing for families, railway enthusiasts and anyone wanting to experience Victorian-style travel in the heart of North Devon.

Features

  • The Railway: Steam trains through rolling countryside, with views out to wild moorland and the rugged coastline. Originally opened in 1898, and closed in 1935; what you can see today at Woody Bay is just the beginning of an exciting project to rebuild one of the world’s most famous and picturesque narrow-gauge railways; the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. A one mile return trip from Woody Bay Station to Killington Lane and back. Two miles in total taking approximately 20 mins.
  • Locomotives & Stock: The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway was always known for its distinctive locomotives and carriages, all built to high standards. Most of the original rolling stock was broken up when the line closed in 1935 and for the first nine years of our operation of the revived railway we used smaller and lighter locomotives and carriages. However, this was only a temporary measure until we were able to rebuild enough heritage rolling stock to accommodate sufficient passengers. Currently we have five rebuilt heritage carriages.
