Description

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Visitor Centre is a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site in North Wales. Often called the “stream in the sky,” it is a masterpiece of engineering carrying the Llangollen Canal high above the River Dee. It is a perfect family-friendly attraction combining history, nature, and stunning views.

The highlight is the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a remarkable 11-mile canal section featuring embankments, tunnels, viaducts and 31 listed structures. Visitors can walk across the aqueduct and enjoy panoramic valley views while spotting swans, coots, moorhens and ducks. The free Trevor Basin Visitor Centre offers hands-on models, films, historic artefacts, and the ‘Stories from the Aqueduct’ exhibition, plus a wooden “build the aqueduct” puzzle for children. There is also the Explorer’s Aqueduct Adventure Trail for families. On-site facilities include parking, refreshments, snacks, ice cream, and toilets located nearby.

It is free to walk along the towpath and aqueduct, while car parking is pay and display.

Overall, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct offers a unique mix of natural beauty and historic engineering. Its interactive visitor centre and scenic canal walk make it an enjoyable and educational day out. It is a must-visit landmark for families, walkers, and heritage lovers exploring North Wales.

Features

World Heritage Site

  • Our 'stream in the sky' - Pontcysyllte Aqueduct - has been named as the most captivating UNESCO World Heritage Site in the world. UNESCO status is given to landmarks or areas that have a major cultural, historical, or scientific form of significance (like the Taj Mahal).
  • Taking the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee valley in North Wales, the aqueduct took ten years to complete and is a fine example of the incredible feats of engineering you can find on our canal network.
  • Our free Trevor Basin Visitor Centre is the best place to start your family day out at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (pronounced Pont–ker-sulth-teh) or 'Ponty' as we call it, with hands-on models, videos, local information, and gifts. You may see swans, coots, moorhens and ducks.

Trevor Basin Visitor Centre

  • With stories, hands on models, games and films, come and discover more about Ponty, how it was built, and why, at our free Trevor Basin Visitor Centre. The aqueduct is actually one of the seven wonders of our waterways.
  • Its story is as amazing as its architecture. So thanks to your generous donations and our own army of dedicated volunteers, we run the visitor centre at Trevor Basin, next to the aqueduct.
  • As well as a treasure trove of curious artefacts dating all the way back to its construction, you can see, hear and watch ‘Stories from the aqueduct'. There's a superb animation of how the Victorian engineers solved the problem of building a canal so high in the sky.
  • You can even challenge your children to building the aqueduct themselves with our fantastic hand-made, wooden ‘build the aqueduct' puzzle.
