Features

Ghyll Scrambling

  • Ghyll Scrambling in the Lake District is a must do activity. It typically involves scaling waterfalls on a rope, scrambling over rocks and jumping into pools of water as you go. It can also involve a slide.
  • Is it different to canyoning? Its a very similar activity and lots of the elements are the same however there’s one major difference – ghyll scrambling involves scaling waterfalls and canyoning involves a desending them.

Canyoning

  • Canyoning is descending (going down) a mountain stream. This typically involves a combination of either some or all of the following: sliding, jumping, abseiling, zip-lining and being lowered on a rope down waterfalls.
  • People get hung up with what the difference is between canyoning and ghyll scrambling is. The only difference is that with one you go up and the other you come down a mountain stream.

Abseiling

  • The abseil sessions take place in a massive disused quarry in Little Langdale called Hodge Close. The abseil is in the region of 100-120 ft. Stunning scenic views will surround you but they can only be enjoyed if you dare open your eyes.
  • You will lower yourself down a big cliff face on a rope in a disused slate quarry. Abseiling is a simple but adrenaline filled way to spend your time in the Lake District. It involves lowering yourself down a massive cliff face on a rope and harness.

Dry Scrambling

  • Dry scrambling involves a roped scramble up ‘The Bell” or “Raven Crag” depending on your location. These scrambles take place on that fantastic terrain that is too steep or exposed to be a walk but not steep enough to be classified as a rock climb.
  • The Bell and Raven Crag both have scrambles of grade 2-3. This means that both of the scrambles offer a hard way or an easy way, making both a perfect taster into what scrambling is all about.
