Features

  • Kirkgate: Welcome to Kirkgate, the oldest indoor street of its kind in Britain. The objects around you, from the lampposts to the horse troughs, are original items from the Victorian period and earlier. We use very few props on Kirkgate, even the carriages are original, and so are nearly all of the shop fronts.
  • Moorland Cottage- The Period Rooms: The Moorland Cottage represents life on the North Yorkshire moors in the middle of the nineteenth century. The family all lived in one room. They slept, cooked and ate here, and in colder weather or when it was raining they worked here too. The objects in the room tell us about the family’s everyday lives.
  • Art of Motion – Clockwork Toys and Other Wonders: Motion is all around us in everything we do. It is no surprise that humans have tried to mimic natural movement by bringing inert objects seemingly to life.
  • Secrets of Dress: Our fashion gallery has been refreshed, remodelled and enhanced with new items and fresh interpretations. Not just an exhibition about fashion, ‘Secrets of Dress’ offers an opportunity to look at dress and textiles from the perspective of social history, exploring the stories that clothes and accessories can reveal about peoples’ lives and experiences.
  • 1914 - When the World Changed Forever: The terror of total war and its revolutionary impact on life globally is explored in this major exhibition marking the centenary of the First World War.
  • The Sixties: The Sixties exhibition aims to recreate the spirit of this exciting decade which saw momentous change in so many areas of public and private life.
  • Debtors’ Prison: The buildings that house York Castle Museum used to be York County Gaol, the main prison for the whole of Yorkshire. There have been prisons on this site for over seven hundred years. You’re in the oldest of the surviving prison buildings, which opened in 1705.
  • Sugar, Skill and Shiftwork - York’s Confectionery Workers: York Castle Museum is proud to present a new community exhibition, Sugar, Skill and Shiftwork: York’s Confectionery Workers, celebrating the history of confectionery in York and the people that contributed towards the world-famous industries’ success during its heyday.
