Features

  • What to Expect: JORVIK Viking Centre stands on the very site of a discovery that changed how we understand Viking life. Between 1976 and 1981, archaeologists from York Archaeological Trust uncovered the houses, workshops and backyards of the Viking-age city of Jorvik. Their extraordinary finds inspired the creation of JORVIK Viking Centre, built directly above the excavation site to share these discoveries in an unforgettable, immersive way.
  • Discover Coppergate: Start your journey by stepping back in time. In the Discover Coppergate gallery, projections and displays bring the original excavation to life. You will also join one of our Viking hosts and experience our interactive temporal portal, where you’ll catch your first glimpse of Viking-age York. See inside a 10th-century blacksmith’s home – the very one on display under the glass floor beneath your feet!
  • Experience Coppergate: Next, prepare to travel back to the 10th century, deep beneath the modern city. Climb aboard one of our Time Cars and journey through Viking-age York. Encounter 22 lifelike animatronic characters and experience the sights, sounds and even the smells of everyday life. Every detail – from the clothing to the animals found in the backyards – is based on real archaeological evidence helping to bring the city to life.
  • Explore Coppergate: Finally, discover the real artefacts found during the Coppergate dig. Our displays reveal the everyday lives of York’s Vikings through delicate metalwork, carved bone objects and tools, and, of course, the world-famous Lloyds Bank Coprolite – a fossilised Viking poop that offers surprising insights into their diet, health, and parasites! You can also see three Viking-age skeletons and learn what their bones tell us about where they came from, home they lived, and the challenges they faced.
