Mary King's Close is a historic close located under the Edinburgh City Chambers building on the Royal Mile, in the historic Old Town area of Edinburgh, Scotland. It took its name from one Mary King, a merchant burgess who resided on the Close in the 17th century.

Due to the crowded living conditions of the closes in the Old Town, sickness spread rapidly through the homes of its residents.   • Parking: Car parking is very limited in Edinburgh’s Old Town. There are a few spaces dotted around, but most are snapped up early.
  • Food & Drinks: You can enjoy a delicious beverage from Mary Ogle’s Coffee Cart. Our cold drinks and snacks stand is named after the original proprietor of the Royal Exchange Coffee House, a favourite institution among locals located above Mary King’s Close in 1740.
  • Dogs: The nature of the tour does not make the tour suitable for animals. If you require the assistance of a Guide Dog please contact us to arrange your visit and we will be happy to accommodate you.

  • By Taxi Cab: Access to the Royal Mile is limited, but a taxi can drop you off directly outside our front door. There are lots of companies operating in Edinburgh, including Central Taxis and, City Cabs.
  • By Rail: Waverley Train Station is a 10-minute walk from our attraction. Most train routes to Edinburgh stop at Waverley. Visit Traveline Scotland to plan your trip.
  • By Bus: Lothian Buses offer excellent services to all parts of the city. If you intend travelling to us by bus, simply choose a service that stops near the high street or bridges.
  • By Bicycle: We’re lucky to have a great cycle network in Edinburgh.  Simply follow the signs for the Old Town and High Street to find us.  We have cycle racks immediately outside our entrance.
