Kirkby Stephen East is a historic station and steam railway, opened in 1861, and now cared for by volunteers of the Stainmore Railway Company. Explore our site to discover our history and ​get information about visiting us. Home to a number of historic Victorian and other vintage , carriages and wagons  plus a range of industrial steam and diesel locomotives. 

You can explore station, which was built in 1861 and served the community here for 100 years, visit the 1930s buffet car (when trains are running) for light refreshments and wander around our small museum. We also offer tours of our maintenance shed and workshop which houses a wide range of historic railway locomotives and rolling stock.

  • You can explore the former viaducts of the Stainmore Route on two picturesque walks.
  • The nature reserve at Smardale is a great spot to visit with walking routes and a superb range of biodiversity to observe and admire.
  • We’re a short car journey from Brough Castle, too. This English Heritage site is formidable in stature and is well worth a visit. It is open 7 days a week.
  • The Coast to Coast walk passes right through Kirkby Stephen, and we can be a great stop off on the way.

  • Easter Saturday 4th April 2026: Craft & Local Food Fayre  as part of the Cumbria Easter Rally - a free event with classic buses and vehicles in Brough, Winton Kirkby Stephen and surrounding area. Free admission with refreshments in the buffet car and charges for train rides.
  • Easter Sunday 5th April 2026: Cumbria Easter Rally Free vintage buses between Brough, Winton Kirkby Stephen and the Mainline Station. Free admission with refreshments in the buffet car and charges for train rides More details on the rally website.  
  • Sunday 31st May 2026: Diesel train service - Free admission with refreshments in the buffet car and charges for train rides. 
  • Sunday 21st June 2026: Model Railway Show - Free admission with refreshments in the buffet car and charges for train rides.

Open from Easter - December on Sundays 10am - 4pm with free admission and offer you the chance to experience railway history from Victorian times to the 1950s. Trains operate on special event days and we have some Saturday events including the annual Easter Rally with classic vehicles and the 1940's weekend.

Getting Here:

  • Kirkby Stephen East is on the outskirts of the small Upper Eden town of Kirkby Stephen. We can be accessed using the A66 from Scotch Corner or from the Tebay Junction 38 on the M6, following the A685.
  • ​A66 route: turn off at the A685 marked Brough / Kirkby Stephen. Drive through the town and we are immediately after the Croglin Castle Appartments on the right. Tebay route: follow A685 past Kirkby Stephen West Station (Settle and Carlisle Line) and turn left just after the bridge before the Croglin Castle Appartments.
  • You can reach us by public transport, too. The Settle and Carlisle Railway has regular trains from Leeds, Skipton, Carlisle and several smaller towns along the way to Kirkby Stephen. We are a 20 minute walk from the mainline rail station. On Saturdays a Stagecoch bus service meets selected trains this is subject to change but is currently supported by Westmorland and Furness Local Council timetable
