New Forest Reptile Centre

Holidays Hill, Bournemouth Road, Lyndhurst, Hampshire, SO43 7NH, England
1-90 Years

Description

The New Forest Reptile Centre is a small but important conservation centre located about 2 miles west of Lyndhurst, showcasing all of Britain’s native reptiles in one place. Visitors can see adders, grass snakes, smooth snakes, lizards, frogs, and toads in open-air netted pens designed to mimic their natural habitats. It’s also home to two of Britain’s rarest species – the smooth snake and the sand lizard – both benefiting from ongoing conservation and breeding programmes.

The centre offers a scenic circular woodland walk starting from the car park, following red marker posts along a mainly gravel path, with some grassy and potentially muddy sections. Families can enjoy spotting reptiles in their natural environments and learning about their conservation. Picnic areas and accessible toilets are available for visitor convenience.

Entry to the Reptile Centre is free, though donations of £3 per visit are welcomed, and parking is available via Pay and Display.

A visit here offers a unique chance to see rare and fascinating reptiles up close while enjoying the beauty of the New Forest. It’s an educational and relaxing experience for nature lovers of all ages. The combination of wildlife spotting and tranquil woodland walks makes it a memorable outing for families, couples, and solo explorers alike.

Features

Enjoy a wonderful circular walk through the woods. From the Reptile Centre car park, follow red marker posts along the main gravelled track, which is fairly smooth. There are parts of the trail on grass and these sections can be muddy in wet weather.  It’s a small but very worthy attraction and conservation centre where you can (potentially…) see all of Britain’s reptiles in one place; adders, grass snakes, smooth snakes, lizards, frogs and toads are displayed in separate open air netted pens, with all reptiles living in their natural environment.

The New Forest Reptile Centre is 2 miles west of Lyndhurst on the A35 (Christchurch) road. There is a small gravel lay-by opposite the entrance at Holidays Hill, but it’s a better idea to drive up the track to the centre and park in one of the two car parks.
