Description

The Isle of Man Steam Railway is a historic narrow-gauge steam railway offering a scenic journey through the countryside of the Isle of Man. Opened in 1873, it runs between Douglas and Port Erin, covering around 15½ miles of picturesque landscapes. Visitors can relax and enjoy traditional rail travel while taking in coastal views and charming Manx scenery.

The steam railway uses original locomotives and carriages, some over 150 years old, and connects historic towns, villages, and heritage attractions along the route. Passengers can visit the Port Erin Railway Museum and nearby landmarks such as Castle Rushen, Rushen Abbey, and Port Erin Beach. A restored Pullman-style Dining Car offers fine dining experiences, themed events, family lunches, and private hire for weddings or corporate functions.

Fare details vary and are available via the official pricing link, with travel tickets offered for journeys along the line. Private hire options allow guests to charter a steam train, enjoy a welcome drink, or book the Dining Train for special events.

A journey on this railway offers a unique blend of history, heritage, and relaxing travel through beautiful countryside. The nostalgic atmosphere, scenic views, and vintage steam locomotives create a memorable experience for visitors of all ages. It is a must-visit attraction for anyone seeking a classic rail adventure and a deeper glimpse into the Isle of Man’s heritage.

Features

  • Steam Railway: The Isle of Man Steam Railway takes you on a journey of nostalgia as it gently rocks through the countryside in the south of the Isle of Man. Along the journey there are beautiful farmland and coastal views surrounding the railway. The line offers fantastic links to some of our most historic towns and villages. At the Port Erin Railway Museum you can learn more about the history of the Islands steam railways and the important contribution they have made over the last 150 years. The line still uses its original steam locomotives and coaches some of which are over 150 years old.
  • The Dining Car: Built in 1905 and restored in 2013, the plush Dining Car is one of only a handful of fine dining narrow gauge dining cars in the world. The sumptuous surroundings of its saloon carriages hark back to the Pullman-style fine dining of yesteryear although there is nothing old fashioned about the fabulous food served on board. Mouth-watering menus offer the best of seasonal home grown produce teamed with carefully chosen wines, beers or soft drinks from the bar car.
