The Charterhouse a medieval monastic house surrounded by acres of tranquil green space. Home to some of the finest examples of medieval and renaissance art in England. This Grade I listed, 14th century building has quite the story to share.  Founded in 1381, Coventry Charterhouse has served many different purposes. 

From a 14th century monastery to a family home and later as a garden that produced exotic fruit for wealthy locals.   Former notable inhabitants include Robert Dudley, famous favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, and John Whittingham who cultivated the nursery and walled garden for food production.  In more recent years, the house has a whole new tale to tell, with tenacious members of the community coming together to save the building from sale and possible demolition.

  • Visiting the house at Coventry Charterhouse: Coventry Charterhouse is a Grade 1 listed heritage site dating back over 600 years. Nestled within a natural landscape of wildlife and greenery on the banks of the River Sherbourne, this characterful gem began life as a Carthusian monastery in the fourteenth century and now stands as a restored heritage site for everyone to discover and enjoy. Today you can visit the Prior’s Cell and the refectory – the only existing interior of a medieval Carthusian monastery in England, complete with medieval and Tudor wall paintings, the latter from the post-dissolution period when the Charterhouse was a private dwelling.
  • History of Coventry’s Charterhouse: In 1381 Lord William Zouche of Harringworth, a patron of Coventry’s Carthusian monks, bought fourteen acres of land in Coventry from local lord Sir Baldwin Frevill, for the purposes of building a settlement for his newly arrived order.  The land by the River Sherbourne was chosen as the perfect place for the new ‘Charterhouse’, the English name for a Carthusian monastery from a rough translation of the original French word ‘chartreuse’.

Non-members pay for parking at the machine in reception or via JustPark app. Free up to an 1 hour, charges apply after this. The distance from the car park to the entrance is 120 metres.   • Food & Drinks: Café Farmers Fayre café open from 9am - 5pm, Wednesday - Sunday. Serving lunches, afternoon teas, hot and cold drinks. No admission ticket required – the café is free to enter and open to all.
  • Dogs allowed: Dogs on leads welcome in the car park, public footpaths across the estate, and lawn area of the gardens. Assistance dogs only in the house and planted area of the gardens.

  • By road: We have a large car park available for Charterhouse visitors just off London Road (A4114). National Trust members park for free. Non members simply pay for parking at the machine in reception or please register via Just Park app and location ID 999745. Charges apply after first hour £2.20 for up to 2 hours, £3.20 for up to 3 hours, £5.20 for up to 8 hours. There is a walk of 120 metres from the drop off point to the front door. Please call if you need assistance and we will be happy to help.
  • On foot: You can find us on foot less than one mile from the city centre, either by walking through London Road Cemetery: Paxton’s Arboretum and across London Road, or by using the back entrance through the alleyway between 229 and 231 Humber Avenue, CV1 2AQ.
  • By train: We’re just a 20 minute (1 mile) walk or a short taxi ride from Coventry train station.
  • By bus: You can jump on the X18 (Stagecoach bus) to Stratford from Stop TS2 near Sainsbury’s in Coventry city centre, arriving on London Road right by the entrance to Charterhouse (nearest stop – Acacia Avenue) in just 10 minutes. The X18 runs every 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can catch the 3 (National Express Coventry bus) towards Warwickshire Shopping Park from Cross Cheaping (Stop BS6) in Coventry city centre, arriving at Humber Avenue on London Road right by the back entrance to Charterhouse in just 7 minutes. The 3 runs every 15 minutes on weekdays.
