Buckinghamshire Railway Centre is a working steam museum and heritage railway located in the Buckinghamshire countryside near Quainton. Set across a large 25-acre site, it offers a relaxed and educational day out for families, railway fans, and visitors of all ages. The centre combines historic trains, museum exhibits, and scenic surroundings in one destination.

Visitors can enjoy steam train rides on Steaming Days, ride the miniature railway, explore the Railway Museum, and visit the glass-roofed Visitor Centre with a shop and café. Museum Days allow guests to explore historic locomotives, interactive displays, and railway artefacts at a quieter pace. The centre also hosts Special Events throughout the year, including Thomas & Friends visits, The Gruffalo, dinosaur events, heritage vehicle rallies, and Emergency Services Day.

Steaming Day prices range from £12.50–£13.75 for adults, £11.50–£12.65 for seniors, and £8.50–£9.35 for children, with family tickets available and children under 3 free. Museum Day prices start from £8.50 for adults and £5.00 for children, and Season Tickets range from £40 to £190, depending on type. The venue also offers birthday parties, weddings, and private events, with hire options available via the events team.

  • Steaming Days: On Steaming Days, you can come for steam train rides, ride the miniature railway, watch the model trains, visit the Railway Museum and Visitor Centre with shop and café, plus lots more. Steaming Days are some Sundays plus some Wednesdays during school holidays. 
  • Museum Days: Spend a day exploring 25 acres of fascinating exhibits, interactive displays, and historic locomotives. Browse our gift shop and second-hand bookshop, enjoy a coffee or lunch in the cafe, and soak up the atmosphere of a bygone era. A quieter day where you can explore at your leisure.
  • Special Events: We hold lots of different special events during the year, ranging from visits by Thomas & Friends, The Gruffalo and a herd of dinosaurs, to several heritage vehicle rallies and Emergency Services Day. Take a look at our What’s On section for more information on what’s coming up. There’s something for everyone! 
  • Cafe only days: Our Railway Cafe is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 2pm for you to enjoy. Cafe users can wander around the Visitor Centre and the area outside, which includes the play park, but the rest of the site is not open.

We have the most stunning Visitor Centre which can be used for not just weddings, but also any parties, functions, conferences, filming, large or small meetings and AGMs. From small meetings and intimate private gatherings, to weddings and parties with 150-person sit down meals, and large or small wakes and business conferences for 250 delegates, we can cater to many, many needs.  We have a full catering kitchen available, different areas for smaller groups to gather, large open spaces inside and out; the opportunities are endless!

  • From Bicester: Drive east along the A41, go all the way through Waddesdon and turn left at the new roundabout and go over the new HS2 bridge and then go straight over the next roundabout, signposted to Quainton. Follow the road for a mile or so, then turn left onto The Willows, signposted Quainton, continue into the village, past The Green, then turn left down Station Road (it will say the road is closed, but the closure is after our entrance.)
  • From Aylesbury: Drive west along the A41 past Aylesbury Parkway railway station, then turn right at the HS2 roundabout, signposted to Waddesdon/Quainton along the new section of A41, then turn right at the next roundabout, signposted to Quainton. Follow the road for a mile or so then turn left onto The Willows, signposted Quainton, continue into the village, past The Green, then turn left down Station Road (it will say the road is closed, but the closure is after our entrance.)
  • From Whitchurch: Come down Pitchcott Hill and turn right onto The Willows, signposted Quainton, continue into the village, past The Green, then turn left down Station Road (it will say the road is closed, but the closure is after our entrance.)
  • From Buckingham/The Claydons: Come through Botolph Claydon, turning off on the bend signposted to Quainton, go past Hogshaw Farm and turn left at Shipton Lee. Continue into the village and turn right onto Station Road (it will say the road is closed, but the closure is after our entrance.)
  • By Bus: We have a bus stop directly outside the entrance to our car park, however, unfortunately, the bus service does not run on Sundays. Red Rose bus service no.16 runs from Aylesbury Bus Station to Quainton and back Monday-Saturdays.
  • By Train: Our nearest station is Aylesbury Vale Parkway which is just 4 miles away. This station is connected to the village of Waddesdon by the Greenway Path which is a footpath suitable for walking or cycling. From Waddesdon it is only 1.5 miles to us. Trains also come in to Aylesbury Town station which is 6 miles away and there is a taxi rank there.
