Description

The Leighton Buzzard Railway is a historic narrow-gauge heritage railway in Bedfordshire that began operating in 1919 to transport sand. Today it runs steam-hauled passenger trains along one of Britain’s last surviving 2-foot gauge industrial railways. The line offers a scenic countryside journey while preserving an important piece of Britain’s industrial and railway heritage.

Visitors can enjoy an 85-minute round trip from Page’s Park to Stonehenge Works through the Bedfordshire countryside. Attractions include a miniature railway offering free rides on selected days, quarry digger displays, Engine Shed guided tours, and one of the UK’s largest collections of narrow-gauge locomotives, wagons, and coaches. Guests can also try the Footplate Experience, explore souvenir and craft shops, and relax at the CuriosiTEA Rooms café.

Ticket prices are £14.00 (£12.70 without Gift Aid) for adults, £12.50 (£11.30) for seniors, and £10.00 (£9.00) for children aged 2–17, with under 2s and dogs travelling free. The Footplate Experience costs £85.00, offering a driver’s-eye view of the railway with a host volunteer accompanying the participant.

With its historic trains, working exhibits, and scenic route, the railway provides an engaging journey into Britain’s industrial past. Visitors can enjoy hands-on experiences, heritage displays, and relaxing countryside views in one visit. It is an ideal destination for families, railway enthusiasts, and anyone looking to experience living railway history.

Features

  • Miniature Railway: Our 7.25 inch track at Stonehenge Works, for working scale-model locomotives and trains, will also be in regular use on selected operating days, offering free rides to passengers from the 'main' railway. This was extended during 2017, and is being refurbished in 2024, but we hope to be back soon!
  • Quarry Digger Displays: Come and see how sand was dug out and transported in the local quarries, using our restored 10RB excavator, and authentic locomotives and tipping wagons. Operats on some special event days.
  • The Engine Shed Show: Free guided tours of the engine shed at Page's Park, with lots of information and pictures about our surprising history, and the chance to get close-up to the engines not being used on the passenger service. Operates every operating day from 1045 to 1610.
  • Locomotives: The Leighton Buzzard Railway’s locomotive fleet numbers more than 60 in total, one of the largest narrow-gauge collections in the United Kingdom. You can find out about any new developments in the latest news section.
  • Wagons and Coaches: The Leighton Buzzard Railway has over 120 wagons in its collection, covering the wide range of industries which once used narrow-gauge railways as an integral part of their operations. Some are still in regular active service, employed on the maintenance of the railway. The heritage railway operation, when it started in 1968, also converted wagons with seats at first, but over the years a collection of dedicated passenger coaches has been bought or built.
  • Footplate Experience: Ever wanted to experience our railway from the perspective of a driver? Now you can with our Footplate Experience package. The package is for one person. An accompanying guest travels free within the carriages on the return trip. The participant should wear stout footwear and close fitting clothing. Shorts, skirts and sandals are not permitted in the cabs of steam locomotives. The participant must be aged 16 or over and able-bodied – hi-vis jackets and work gloves will be provided. The tour will be accompanied throughout by a ‘host’ volunteer.

Facilities

  • Page's Park Souvenir Shop: The station shop at Page's Park stocks a wide range of souvenirs and gifts, from children's toys to serious railway books and DVDs, and of course our guide book.
