The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace is responsible for all road travel arrangements for The King and members of the Royal Family, from horse-and-carriage to car and from livery to harness. 

See what goes on behind the scenes at a real working stables in the heart of London. As part of your visit, you'll discover the iconic 260-year-old Gold State Coach used at State occasions such as the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, the Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and the Coronation of King Charles III in 2023.

  • Gold State Coach: The Gold State Coach is the grandest coach at the Royal Mews. At 260 years old it has been used at every coronation since that of William IV.
  • Carriage horses: Look out for a horse or two during your visit to the Mews. There are 2 types of horses used to pull the carriages at the Mews: Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays. 
  • Diamond Jubilee State Coach: Built to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, this is the newest coach at the Mews and was first used at the State Opening of Parliament on 4 June 2014. 
  • Try out a royal carriage: Imagine stepping into a royal carriage, sitting down and practicing your regal waving just as Queen Victoria did in 1897. In the Royal Mews State Stable you can experience this with our replica Semi-State Landau.
  • Livery: During your visit you can see the livery worn by The King's coachmen. Different liveries are used for different occasions.Apart from a few small details, the livery remains much the same as it was in Victorian times, and some of the tailors who produce today's livery are the same companies used during the reign of George III. 
  • Tack up a wooden pony: Leather harnesses are used to connect the horses to the carriage which they are pulling. In the State Stables children can have a go at tacking up a wooden pony to get it ready to pull a carriage. 
  • Guided tour: You can take a free 45-minute guided tour of the Royal Mews with our Wardens. Learn details about the historic carriages and modern cars, and hear about the work needed to prepare for major State and ceremonial occasions.
  • Things to do with children: Explore a very special corner of London, a place of tradition and history, with your guides Majesty and Scout, two of the royal horses, and Rex the Corgi!

Facilities

  • Food & Drinks: Eating and drinking are not permitted inside the Royal Mews, except for bottled water. You will be asked to place drinks and food in closed bags before being admitted.But there are many cafés and restaurants in the local area. 
  • Toilets: Toilets, a Changing Space and baby care facilities are located adjacent to the large State Coach House in the middle of the visitor route.
