Description

Pells Pool, the oldest documented freshwater outdoor public swimming pool in the UK, is located in the historic town of Lewes, East Sussex. Established in 1861, it is a spring-fed, unheated pool that measures 50 yards (46m) in length and 25 yards (23m) in width. The pool welcomes thousands of visitors annually between May and November, offering not only the main pool but also a paddling pool for children, a sun terrace, and a picturesque, tree-lined lawn perfect for picnics and relaxation after a refreshing swim. Celebrating its 160th anniversary in 2021, Pells Pool continues to be a community-run facility, operated by the Pells Pool Community Association and supported by Lewes Town Council, who act as trustees for the land and pool. The pool is heated naturally by the sun, meaning the water is typically cool at the start of the season in May but gradually warms up as summer progresses. Wetsuits are welcome, and at least one lane is usually available for lap swimming.

Admission for adults is £4.20 for a 1-hour session, while children under 2 can swim for free, with other children paying £2.00 per session.
