  • Chapel: The story of the Chapel lies at the heart of that of the Charterhouse and helps tell the wider history of our nation from medieval times to the present day.
  • Gardens: The Charterhouse gardens comprise Charterhouse Square and six courtyard gardens within our walls. Charterhouse Square is a rare green space open to everyone to enjoy on the border of Islington and the City of London. It was redesigned and opened to the public thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2017.
  • The Great Chamber: The Great Chamber has witnessed many grand royal occasions and was the backdrop to decades of Tudor entertaining, plotting and intrigue. It is the only Tudor great chamber to survive in London, albeit in a restored form, and remains a jewel in the crown of our historic site.
  • Museum Display: From its beginnings in the 14th century as a burial ground for Black Death victims to the modern day Almshouse community of today, The Charterhouse has lived a rich and layered history.The museum display tells the history of the Charterhouse through objects, starting in the near present day and travelling backwards in time. It takes a look at the daily life of the Brothers (residents), the school and the origins of the charity, as well as the Tudor and medieval periods of the Charterhouse. 
  • Collections: The Charterhouse has a significant archive collection, as well as a collection of objects, prints and paintings acquired over the course of its 660 year history. 
  • Almshouse: The Almshouse Association defines an almshouse as being “a unit of residential accommodation (usually a house or flat) which belongs to a charity, is provided exclusively to meet the charity’s purposes (for example, the relief of financial need or infirmity) and is occupied or is available for occupation under a licence by a qualified beneficiary”. 
  • Historic Buildings & Rooms: From its 1348 origins as a Black Death burial ground to a Carthusian monastery, Tudor mansion, and modern charitable foundation, the Charterhouse is a landmark of London’s evolving history. Discover a unique heritage site defined by faith, ambition, and community.
