Description

The South London Gallery, founded 1891, is a public-funded gallery of contemporary art in Camberwell, London. Until 1992, it was known as the South London Art Gallery, and nowadays the acronym SLG is often used. Margot Heller became its director in 2001.

Today the gallery comprises its original site at 65 Peckham Road; the Fire Station (which opened to the public in September 2018); Art Block, a space for local children and families on Sceaux Gardens estate and an artist-designed garden.

  • Main Building: The South London Gallery (SLG) is an internationally renowned public institution, with an established reputation for its contemporary exhibitions, education and events programme.
  • Fire Station: The South London Gallery (SLG) opened the former Peckham Road Fire Station as a new contemporary arts space and annexe to the main site in 2018.
  • Gardens: The South London Gallery has two permanent gardens, the Orozco Garden and the Fox Garden.
  • Online Archive: Visit the South London Gallery's online archive to discover more about the history of the SLG and the local area. The archive includes our interactive map charting the changing cultural and social landscape of Peckham and Camberwell from the 1860s to the present day.
  • Tours and Group Visits: The South London Gallery is free and open to all, Wednesday - Sunday. All groups are welcome to the South London Gallery, though we do ask groups of 10 people or more to pre-book their visit, 4 weeks in advance, subject to availability.
  • Schools & Teachers: Visits, workshops and resources for education groups and teachers.
  • Shop: Limited edition artworks are made exclusively for the South London Gallery by artists to support the gallery’s activities. All proceeds from the editions go directly towards supporting the exhibition, events, education and outreach programmes.

  • Parking: There are no parking facilities at the South London Gallery, but there is pay and display parking on the surrounding streets. The parking bays on Talfourd Road, Crofton Road, Shenley Road and Bushey Hill Road all operate paid parking from 8.30am-6.30am Monday-Friday and are free to use on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Food & Drinks: South London Louie serves strong coffee from Redemption Roasters (the UK’s first prison-based roastery), delicious pastries and cakes from their bakery in Walworth, Saint Louie and weekend brunch, Sat and Sun from 10am-3pm. Every day we serve fresh salads, sandwiches and toasties for lunch.
  • Toilets: All toilets in the SLG Fire Station are gender neutral. In the Main Building gender neutral toilets are available by the Main Gallery, in the café and in the Clore Studio.
  • Animals: Registered service animals are welcome in all areas of the South London Gallery.

Venue Hire: The South London Gallery (SLG) blends award-winning contemporary architecture with Victorian elegance with venues spanning two sites only 120 metres apart. Located in the heart of Camberwell and Peckham, we are pleased to offer a range of distinctive spaces for private functions, wedding receptions, corporate events and meetings. We also welcome commercial filming and photo shoots.
