What to see

PREHISTORY
The display of 8000 year old material from Bouldnor Cliff – the UK’s only identified submerged Mesolithic occupation site – is the only place where it is possible to see the stone tools, worked wooden features and range of ecofact material from the site.

SHIPWRECKS
The shipwreck collection is one of the largest in the country and contains artefacts from wrecks which have been involved in defining moments in history and have shaped maritime contact between nations. Developed over the past 40 years by Isle of Wight diver and explorer Martin Woodward, the collection reflects the unique shipwreck heritage of the Island, but is also of national importance for understanding maritime history, ship technology and marine artefact typologies. Included within the collection are artefacts from some of UK designated protected and scheduled historic shipwrecks and submarines.

MARITIME ISLE OF WIGHT
The history of the Isle of Wight is a history of human relationships with the sea. Our range of displays demonstrate how ships and shipping have been intrinsic to the development of the Island. Through artefacts, models, paintings and articles we explore themes including lighthouses and navigating local waters.

HISTORY OF DIVING
Modern maritime archaeology relies on diving equipment for the process of discovery and investigation. However, diving has a long history with the concept of the diving bell being invented and used in 1535, and ideas of a device to be able to go underwater being described as early as the 4th Century BC by Aristotle.

SHIP MODELS
There are over 30 ship models featured at the Shipwreck Centre, they represent a diverse range of ships from fully rigged sailing ships, including a clipper, to smaller barges and ketches. Several lifeboat models demonstrate changes in design and size over time. The age of steam is represented through a steam coaster and tugs. More unusual models include ships in bottles and a Mississippi Sternwheeler.

SUBMARINES
Explore the fascinating submarine heritage from the waters around the Isle of Wight. The collection includes material from submarines from the First and Second World Wars, including examples that have special legal protection due to their significance. The SWC is the only place with artefacts from the A1 and U90 on display in England. We also have information and artefacts from HMS Swordfish, U-1195, UB-81 and USS Sea Owl.
