Description

Shaws Corner is the former home of playwright, politician, and philosopher George Bernard Shaw, located in the peaceful village of Ayot St Lawrence, Hertfordshire. Shaw lived in this Edwardian villa for over 40 years from 1906, during the height of his fame. Today, the house and gardens remain much as he left them, offering a calm and thoughtful visitor experience.

Visitors can explore the Edwardian country house with its Arts and Crafts interiors and original collections linked to Shaw’s life and work. The tranquil gardens feature rolling lawns, colourful borders, a fruit orchard, and Shaw’s famous rotating writing hut. Other highlights include pre-booked guided house tours, free-flow house access later in the day, and a bookshop stocked with pre-loved books and Shavian works.

Entry prices are £12.40 per adult with Gift Aid (£11.00 without) and £6.10 per child aged 5–17 with Gift Aid (£5.50 without), with under 5s free. Family tickets cost £30.30 with Gift Aid (£27.50 without) for 2 adults and up to 3 children, while 1 adult with up to 3 children costs £18.20 with Gift Aid (£16.50 without).

Shaws Corner offers a quiet and inspiring visit steeped in literary history. The preserved interiors and peaceful gardens encourage reflection on Shaw’s life, wit, and ideas. It’s an ideal destination for literature lovers, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a relaxing National Trust day out in Hertfordshire.
