The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, is the geology museum of the University of Cambridge. It is part of the Department of Earth Sciences and is located on the university's Downing Site in Downing Street, central Cambridge, England.

The Sedgwick Museum is housed in a beautiful historic building, but access to the Museum is not easy for everyone. The Museum is located on the first floor, with lift access that is not yet suitable for everyone. We are working to improve access for all visitors, and in the meantime we are always willing to help visitors with access requirements.

  • Collections: Welcome to the Collections section of the Sedgwick Museum website. This section is open to all but is primarily aimed at those wanting to use the Museum’s collections for research and study purposes. Here you will find information that will help you to plan your research enquiry or visit.
  • The Museum's Collections: The Museum collections are maintained primarily for research purposes; they contain material referenced in scientific and humanities research literature and include material used for research in the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, including  postgraduate theses. 
  • Woodwardian Collection: 9,400 rocks, minerals, fossils and archaeological artefacts donated to the University of Cambridge in 1728 by Dr John Woodward. 
  • Palaeontology Collection: Approximately 1,000,000 fossils from the UK and the rest of the world. It includes about 9,000 primary types and 32,000 figured and cited specimens mostly from the UK. 
  • Petrology Collection: Over 160,000 igneous and metamorphic rocks from the UK and the rest of the world with approximately 250,000 associated thin sections. The collection includes an additional 114,000 sedimentary rocks and other petrological material. 
  • Mineral Collection: Approximately 55,000 minerals, mostly of historic interest. The collection includes over 600 meteorites actively used in research.
  • J. Watson Building and Decorative Stone Collection: A collection of 2,500 building stones, decorative stones and other building materials.
  • Svalbard Collection: A collection of about 60,000 rocks fossils and cores from the Svalbard Archipelago, Greenland.
  • Sedgwick Museum Archive: Approximately 900 archive boxes of material relating to the Sedgwick Museum, its staff, collections and donors including original manuscript catalogues of many collections gifted to or purchased by the Museum. It also includes the archives of the Sedgwick Club, the world’s oldest student run geological society.
  • Artwork Collection: The Museum holds a small collection of artworks, predominantly portraits and busts depicting key figures in the history of the Museum and Department of Earth Sciences. 
  • Exhibitions: To complement the permanent displays, the Sedgwick Museum curates temporary exhibitions. These include collaborations with researchers and artists and also reflect relevant news stories, events and anniversaries.

Facilities

  • Parking: For visitors with restricted mobility, we recommend the Grand Arcade carpark which has blue badge spaces and is located directly opposite the Museum accessible from Corn Exchange Street via Downing Street.
  • Eating and drinking: The Sedgwick Museum does not have a café on site (and eating and drinking is not permitted in the Museum) but there are several open spaces nearby for picnics in good weather and our team will be happy to tell you about other local places to eat, including The Whale Café at the nearby Museum of Zoology which is open to the public.
  • Toilets: There is a toilet available in the Museum. Public toilets are also available only five minutes walk away in the Lion Yard shopping centre where there is also a Changing Spaces toilet (Cambridge Shopmobility).

  • Getting to the Museum: The Museum is located on the Downing Site of the University of Cambridge. The site is accessed through an archway from Downing Street, the Museum is signposted from the street. Once through the archway visitors should turn left and look for the sweeping stone staircase above the main entrance to the Department of Earth Sciences.
  • Parking: For visitors with restricted mobility, we recommend the Grand Arcade carpark which has blue badge spaces and is located directly opposite the Museum accessible from Corn Exchange Street via Downing Street.
