Welcome to the M Shed from prehistoric times to the present day, M Shed tells the story of the city and its unique place in the world. Coming soon! Cracking Exhibition Gromit: 50 Years of Aardman in Bristol.

See amazing film and photographs, listen to moving personal stories, encounter rare and quirky objects and add your own memories of Bristol through the interactive displays. From prehistoric times to the present day, M Shed tells the story of the city and its unique place in the world.

Entry is free – but donations are always welcome. If you are looking for Best place for day out with kids and families then this is the perfect destination offering fun, adventure, and unforgettable memories for everyone.

  • Bristol Places: The Bristol Places gallery focuses on the physical and dynamic city – the ways that people have shaped and experienced it and continue to do so.
  • Bristol People: The Bristol People gallery explores activities past and present that make Bristol what it is – creating, trading, challenging and celebrating.
  • Bristol Life: The Bristol Life gallery explores people’s shared experiences in the city, from the momentous to the everyday – see, hear and share stories.
  • The Working Exhibits: Read about some of our biggest exhibits which are outside M Shed and can be seen even when the museum is closed.
  • Treasures in store: L Shed, adjoining M Shed, contains thousands of items from the industrial, maritime and social history collections.
  • Disability Activism in Bristol: pioneers, protests and progress from the 1980s to now: This display is a collaboration with Bristol Disability Equality Forum.

Families:

  • Little M Shed: Enjoy some playtime with your pre-schooler. We’ve got dressing-up clothes, books to share, a pretend shop and a transport table with lots of trains and vehicles.
  • Bristol 650 Trail: To celebrate 650 years of Bristol history, pick up this special edition trail. It all begins with a very important royal charter from 1373….
  • ABC Trail: Pick up an ABC Trail from the front desk to start exploring M Shed!
  • Ride the working exhibits: Keep an eye on what’s on to find out when the next trips are – there’s trains, boats and of course the famous cranes to ride! A fabulous way to spend a day with the family.
  • Bus closure: Due to damage, M Shed’s green bus is currently closed. We’re reviewing how we provide access for visitors to experience this unique object. 

Facilities

  • Parking: There are two car parks nearby at The Grove (BS1 4RB) and Wapping Wharf (BS1 4RH). There are five disabled spaces at The Grove and three next to Brunel’s Buttery. There are four accessible spaces in the Wapping Wharf car park. 
  • Food & Drinks: M Café is located on the ground floor of M Shed and enjoys lovely views across the harbour and city. We offer a delicious range of fresh, Fairtrade and organic hot and cold food and drinks including a selection of homemade cakes, sandwiches and specials from our deli range.
  • Toilets: Toilets throughout the museum throughout the museum.
  • Lockers: Lockers – £1 per use.

  • By car: We’re located on the harbourside in the city centre on Wapping Road (BS1 4RN) around two miles from the M32 motorway.
  • By train: It’s about a 20 minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads train station to M Shed. A number of buses leave from Bristol Temple Meads to the city centre, around a five minute walk away.
  • By bus: You can catch any bus with a city centre drop off – you’ll be dropped off at Broad Quay which is about a five minute walk away. The M2 Metrobus service is currently diverted via Coronation Road, serving stops across the river. 
  • By boat: You can catch a ferry from Bristol Temple Meads and Hotwells to Prince Street Bridge on the Floating Harbour, which is a five minute walk away.
  • On foot: We’re located on the harbourside, a five to 10 minute walk from the city centre or a 20 minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads train station.
  • By bike: There is a dedicated cycle track to the south/back of M Shed. There is no cyclist access on the dockside at the front of the museum.
