Hopetoun House is a grand 17th-century stately home set within beautiful grounds near Edinburgh. Known as one of Scotland’s finest stately homes, it offers a blend of history, architecture and scenic landscapes. Open seasonally, it provides a memorable visitor experience with elegant interiors and expansive outdoor spaces.

Visitors can explore the historic house with its Georgian interiors, period furniture, artwork and detailed craftsmanship, as well as enjoy nature trails, wildlife spotting and scenic walks around the estate. Activities include Outlander guided tours of filming locations, geocaching, children’s nature trails, Junior Rangers programmes and visits to the Ranger Centre with interactive displays and games. The estate also features the Stables Kitchen café, woodland areas, gardens and event spaces for weddings, celebrations and educational visits. 

Ticket prices for House and Grounds are £15.00 for adults, £7.00 for children (4–15), £13.50 for concessions and £40.00 for families (2+2), while Grounds Only tickets are £7.00 for adults and £4.00 for children. Additional pricing includes £6.50 concessions, £4.00 disabled access, £1.00 for Young Scot Card holders and free entry for children under 4.

  • Grounds and Wildlife: The grounds at Hopetoun are the perfect place to watch and enjoy wildlife. From quiet woodland corners to the beautiful spring garden, there is something to look out for throughout the year. Feel free to also visit the Ranger Centre while you are at Hopetoun for more interpretation on what you might see on your visit.

  • Parking: Car parking at Hopetoun is free of charge with the exception of large public events where additional charges may apply.
  • Food & Drinks: Nestled within the beautifully restored 18th‑century Adam Stables, The Stables Kitchen is a relaxed, family‑friendly café serving comforting, seasonal dishes made with quality Scottish ingredients. Just a short journey from Edinburgh, it’s the perfect place to pause during a visit to Hopetoun House or a stroll around the grounds.

Things to Do with Children at Hopetoun House

  • Grounds Trails: Families can wander woodland paths, spot local wildlife, and take part in our trail activities. Our downloadable kids nature trails makes each visit an adventure.
  • Ranger Centre: Visit the Ranger Centre, for games, the big Hopetoun bug hunt, colouring sheets, interactive displays and the chance to handle wildlife finds from the grounds.
  • Stables Kitchen: Enjoy a tasty treat at the Stables Kitchen. 
  • Geocaching: Geocaching is a global treasure hunt, with thousands of caches hidden all over the world for you to explore and find with a GPS enabled device.  Hopetoun has one Geocaching trail- the Hopetoun Hop. For those already familiar with Geocaching, download the Hopetoun Hop or visit the Geocaching website for more information.
  • Hopetoun Junior Rangers: Hopetoun Junior Rangers is a fun, outdoors club for 11-18 year olds with an interest in nature and the countryside. Email our Ranger Service for more information.
