Highgate Cemetery

Description

Highgate Cemetery is a historic Victorian cemetery in north London, known for its peaceful atmosphere, winding woodland paths, and striking ivy-covered monuments. Set on a steep hillside, it offers a secluded and reflective escape from the busy city. It is both a place of remembrance and a fascinating visitor attraction rich in history, nature, and architecture.

The cemetery is celebrated for its Victorian architecture, carefully designed landscape, and historic buildings that created a prestigious alternative to churchyard burials. Visitors can explore its deep history, learning how it developed as a solution to London’s 19th-century burial crisis, as well as discover the stories of the people buried here, both famous and lesser known. Highgate Cemetery is also a haven for nature and wildlife, home to trees, plants, butterflies, hoverflies, and rare cave spiders, and it offers private guided tours lasting around 75 minutes.

Guided tour prices are £18 for adults, £9 for children aged 8–17, and £9.50 for students. Group visits without a tour cost £10 per adult, £5 for children aged 8–17, and £8 for students, with a minimum group fee of £100.

Highgate Cemetery offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. Walking through the grounds feels both atmospheric and educational, encouraging quiet reflection and curiosity. It’s an ideal place for visitors interested in Victorian London, heritage landscapes, and a calmer, more thoughtful day out in the capital.

Features

  • Architecture: From its earliest days, the architecture of Highgate Cemetery was a source of wonder and delight. As well as fulfilling a practical purpose, its buildings and landscape had to tempt families away from burial in their local churchyards by providing a dignified and prestigious environment.
  • History: It’s difficult for us today, when cemeteries are old and crumbling, to realise how new-fangled they were in the early nineteenth century. Highgate Cemetery was a private solution to a very public problem: how to dispose of the dead of the burgeoning metropolis? Over the years it has developed in a way its founders would never have expected.
  • Nature: In the scientific community, cemeteries are known as havens for life. The plants and trees are most visible, but there are also important pollinators like hoverflies and butterflies. Highgate Cemetery is also host to rare cave spiders;
  • People: The stories of Highgate Cemetery are as diverse as the people buried here. Some of them are well-known, some are being rediscovered, and others will remain untold. They can give us fascinating insights into the lives and habits of our predecessors, and food for thought about how we live our own lives
  • Private Tours: Private group tours last around 75 minutes and take in the unmissable highlights of the West side of Highgate Cemetery with our excellent volunteer guides. The price includes admission to the whole Cemetery on the day of the tour leaving your party free to explore this remarkable place further at their leisure.

There is also a cafe in Lauderdale House.
