Features

Collections:

  • Hertford Museum cares for in excess of 100,000 objects. Our collections include archaeology, ephemera, ethnography, fine art, geology, Hertfordshire Regiment, natural history, photographs and social history. We also hold the Addis company archive, including the largest collection of toothbrushes in the world.
  • Museum founders, the Andrews brothers, began collecting in the late 19th century and opened the museum in 1903 at their offices in Fore Street. The diversity of the collection illustrates their success in attracting donations from well travelled Hertfordians and local collectors.
  • The museum collects and preserves the heritage of Hertford and over 30 villages in East Hertfordshire.
  • Approximately 5% of our collections are on display at any one time (see Permanent Display), with our reserve collections available for view or research by appointment and on loan to other accredited museums.

Exhibitions: The Museum displays around 5% of its eclectic collections in two permanent display galleries across two floors, both fully accessible. In addition, we deliver a rolling programme of diverse and engaging temporary exhibitions throughout the year in our special exhibitions gallery. This provides an opportunity to learn about and enjoy some of the other items from our vast collection.
