Hardcastle Crags a beauty spot of the South Pennines with more than 400 acres of unspoilt woodland. As well as being the home of the northern hairy wood ant, there are tumbling streams, glorious waterfalls and stacks of millstone grit, all crisscrossed by more than 15 miles of footpaths.

At the heart of the woodland you'll find Gibson Mill, home to the Weaving Shed Cafe. Having no link to the national grid, the mill is unique in the UK and is the Trust's flagship sustainable building.   • Hardcastle Crags: A beauty spot of the South Pennines with more than 400 acres of unspoilt woodland. A steep climb up to the Crags which give the site its name offers stunning views.
  • Gibson Mill: A 19th-century cotton mill set in the middle of a rugged valley. Today, the mill is totally off the grid and houses our Weaving Shed Café and regular exhibitions.
  • Walking: More than 15 miles of footpaths to explore through the woodland and wider countryside. Lots of beautiful spots and wildlife to discover on route.
  • Family fun at Hardcastle Crags: The woodland at Hardcastle Crags is a huge, natural play area for our younger visitors. From crossing the river on stepping stones, to den building and exploring the woodland on a family walk, there's lots to discover on a visit.
  • Wildlife at Hardcastle Crags: Hardcastle Crags is home to an amazing array of wildlife. From bats to beetles and skylarks to bluebells there's ​plenty to be discovered at Hardcastle Crags. If you're looking to get close to nature, here are some of the wonderful wildlife highlights that you might be lucky to see on a visit.
  • Art at Hardcastle Crags: Gibson Mill, built in 1805, was one of the first cotton mills of the Industrial Revolution. Today, this historic building is home to a vibrant programme of art and exhibitions, showcasing creativity in a unique setting. Across its second and third floors, you’ll find regularly changing displays featuring local artists, thought-provoking installations, and works inspired by nature, heritage and conservation.
  • Walking at Hardcastle Crags: Hardcastle Crags has over 15 miles of footpaths to explore. Grab your walking boots and discover tumbling streams, deep ravines and ragged rocks on a walk at Hardcastle Crags.
  • Orienteering at Hardcastle Crags: We invite you to discover the joy of self-navigation with one of our new orienteering maps. Choose from three levels for a bespoke challenge, perfect for families or more experienced explorers, and get that feeling of satisfaction that comes from finding your way in the great outdoors.
  • Second-hand bookshop: Inside the historic Gibson Mill, you’ll find the second-hand bookshop, which is run by our dedicated volunteers.

Facilities

  • Car park: Our pay and display car parks at Clough Hole, Widdop Road HX7 7AZ and Midgehole HX7 7AA are £5 for up to 4 hours or £8 all day, coins only. No change given. Please be aware there is a 2m barrier on Clough Hole car park.
  • Food & Drinks: Weaving Shed Café - Open seven days a week from April to November and Friday - Sunday during the winter months. Serving a range of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, soup, cakes and ice cream. Indoor and outdoor seating available.
  • Dogs allowed: Dogs under control in the woodland. On lead near livestock and in the cafe and Gibson Mill.

What to see

Top trails: 

  • Crags Constitutional walk: A chance to explore a quieter part of Hardcastle Crags with dramatic cliffs, waterfalls and lovely beech woods. The route starts along the edge of a lovely mill dam and then stays very close to the stream where you should watch out for Dippers, Wagtails and Herons.
  • Railway Trail walk: A varied circular walk through woods, alongside the stream and dams with great views along the higher slopes. Watch out for bluebells in the Spring. Part of this route follow the old railway that was used to build the reservoirs on the tops.
  • Mill walk (riverside): An exciting walk for both children and adults. See how the stream changes along the route, looking out for weirs, the occasional Heron and stepping stones – a fun way to get across to the other side.
  • Mill walk (upper woodland): There are some great views over the Hebden Valley, especially from the spectacular rocky outcrop called Slurring Rock. The route goes through a wonderful stand of pines and you should watch out for some of the local wildlife on this quieter part of the Crags.

  • By road: Two pay-and-display car parks are available - Clough Hole Car Park (HX7 7AZ) and Midgehole Car Park (HX7 7AA). There is some distance between the two. There is a 2m barrier on Clough Hole. Car parking charge will apply, £5 for up to 4 hours or £8 all day, National Trust members park free. Cash only. From both car parks you will need to walk to access Gibson Mill (note: route is steep from Clough Hole). Only disabled badge holders are allowed to park at Gibson Mill (please call to book)
  • By train: Midgehole Car Park is 1.8 miles (roughly a 40-minute walk) from Hebden Bridge railway station, with Gibson Mill another mile from there. For local trains www.wymetro.com or call 0113 245 7676.
  • On foot: Access on foot via riverside walk from Hebden Bridge. Pennine Way and Bridleway both pass close to the property. Midgehole Car Park is 1.8 miles (roughly a 40-minute walk) from Hebden Bridge railway station, with Gibson Mill another mile from there.
  • By bus: For local buses visit www.wymetro.com or call 0113 245 7676.
  • Cycling: NCN68 passes close by.
