Grosvenor Museum is a museum in Chester, Cheshire, in the United Kingdom. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. Its full title is The Grosvenor Museum of Natural History and Archaeology, with Schools of Science and Art, for Chester, Cheshire and North Wales.

Our collections cover art, natural history and silver and include a large photography archive alongside a significant collection of archaeological artefacts. We hold a nationally important collection of Chester assayed silver, and an internationally important collection of Roman tombstones.

  • History of the museum: The Grosvenor MuseumThe Grosvenor Museum was built in 1885-6 to house the collections of the Chester Archaeological Society and the Chester Society of Natural Science, Literature and Art, together with schools of Science and Art. It was designed by the Chester architect Thomas Meakin Lockwood.DCollections: West Cheshire Museums holds a wide range of collections, covering the history and prehistory of Chester and Cheshire.  Our collections cover art, natural history and silver and include a large photography archive alongside a significant collection of archaeological artefacts.   • Galleries: The Art GalleryThe Grosvenor Museum houses a large and varied collection. Some of our best collections are on permanent display, such as our internationally important collection of Roman tombstones. We also have a range of special exhibitions that often feature other items from our collections. These displays can be found in Gallery 1 on the ground floor, and Gallery 2 on the first floor.

  • By bus: The Museum is a 10-15 minute walk from Chester Bus Station. From the Cross, walk down Bridge Street and at the traffic lights turn right onto Grosvenor Street. The museum is on the left hand side.
  • By train: The Museum is a 20 minute walk from Chester Railway Station. Or you can take the Rail Link bus from directly outside the station entrance to the city centre (ticket £1). The Museum is a 15 minute walk from the bus stop on Foregate Street.
