Green Park

Description

Although situated so close to St James's Park, The Green Park is quite different in character. It is more peaceful with mature trees and grassland and is surrounded by Constitution Hill, Piccadilly and the Broad Walk. The Green Park was first recorded in 1554 as the place where a rebellion took place against the marriage of Mary I to Philip II of Spain. It was a famous duelling site until 1667 when Charles II bought an extra 40 acres and it became known as upper St James's Park.

The Green Park is a peaceful refuge for people living, working or visiting central London, and is particularly popular for sunbathing and picnics in fine weather. It is also popular as a healthy walking route to work for commuters. The paths are used extensively by joggers and runners. The Green Park was first recorded in 1554 when Sir Thomas Wyatt led a rebellion in protest against the marriage of Mary I to Philip II of Spain. Royal Gun Salutes mark special royal occasions. On these days salutes are fired from locations in London and other authorised stations in the United Kingdom and the Union flag is hoisted on government buildings. In London, salutes are fired in Hyde Park by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and at The Tower of London. However, on State Visits, at the State Opening of Parliament and for The Queen's Birthday Parade, The Green Park is used instead of Hyde Park.

Bomber Command Memorial
The Bomber Command Memorial commemorates the 55,573 who died while serving in the Bomber Command during the Second World War. It is located in The Green Park along Piccadilly.  The closest tube station to the memorial is Hyde Park Corner. The Bomber Command Memorial was designed by architect Liam O'Connor and was built using Portland stone. Within the memorial are the bronze sculptures of a Bomber Command aircrew.

Canada Memorial
The Canada Memorial was unveiled by the Queen in 1994 and remembers the one million Canadians who served with British forces during the two World Wars. The narrow walkway, dividing the memorial in two, faces the direction of the Canadian port of Halifax in Nova Scotia, from where many Canadian service personnel sailed for Europe. The bronze leaves embedded in the granite are maple, the national symbol of Canada. The designer was the Quebec artist, Pierre Granche.

Canada Gate
Canada Gate was installed in the early years of the 20th century as part of the memorial to Queen Victoria. They form a grand entrance into The Green Park. The gates were a gift from Canada, celebrating its contribution to the then British Empire. The metalwork includes the crests of Canadian provinces. From Canada Gate into The Green Park is a wide grass path lined with trees, known as The Broadwalk. It was planted in 1905 to create a good view of the Queen Victoria Memorial from Piccadilly.
