Trinity Catholic High School, Woodford Green is State Secondary school for kids aged 11 to 18 (Gender - Mixed)
Christmas and New Year have passed. They have all enjoyed the Holy Season and now the Good Ship Trinity is leaving port to sail, (they pray) smooth waters to Easter. This will be a very busy term in many respects. The Years 11 and 13 are on the verge of taking their public exams. Naturally, this is a concern for teachers though they are also committed to the pursuit of excellence for each and every student. The social life of the school, in all its richness, will continue to develop. The co-curricular activities offer splendid opportunities, be it chamber music or achievements on the sports field. Naturally, of course, the religious life of the school is strongly entwined in everything they do. They started this term by holding a Blessed Sacrament Assembly for every year. During these very solemn occasions, tthey all pledgethemselves to the Vision of the school, to Christ and to the betterment of each and everyone. The vocation is to serve with compassion and dedication. They pray to the Wisdom of God to help us achieve the very best for each and every individual in the community. Of course, the term culminates in the glorious and dramatic events of Easter. Spring will come and, as always, the Resurrection occurs time and time again in so many of the lives.
KS3 Curriculum
At KS3, there is a strong focus on curriculum breadth with students studying all core and foundation subjects of the National Curriculum across the three years. Religious Education is at the heart of the curriculum and all students study Theology. All students study either French or Spanish at KS3. The KS3 curriculum is designed to be knowledge – focused across the range of subjects, ensuring that thry not only fulfil the National Curriculum but fuel students’ intellectual curiosity instilling an appreciation of the world and the place within this. Throughout KS3 we seek to nurture students’ enjoyment and love of learning, cultivating essential skills and disciplined habits of mind required for successful study. The broad and balanced diet at KS3 acknowledges that the students are individual and is designed to give a range of experiences and opportunities to help students develop into rounded individuals with a range of strengths and talents. Importantly, the KS3 curriculum is challenging and rigorous, building the academic foundations for GCSE and further study.
KS4 Curriculum
The students continue with a broad and rigorous curriculum at KS4. Core subjects, English, mathematics, science (combined or Triple), PE and CPR are compulsory. All students study for a GCSE in Religious Education. Three optional subjects are chosen by students and all students have access to the full range of choices. Students are encouraged to choose options which relate to their interests and which facilitate future career aspirations. Students are well informed about the benefits of an academic pathway such as the EBacc and are encouraged to continue with a humanities subject and a modern foreign language and/or heritage language. Certain MFL groupings within Y9 continue with an MFL language to GCSE, though the study of languages is open to all students. The options reflect a broad and balanced curriculum comprising languages, humanities, technology and arts subjects. Most students study for 9 GCSEs (some 10). A small number of students will study fewer and are supported with extra English and mathematics and a ‘Careers and Experiencing Work’ short ASDAN course.
Co-curricular and Extracurricular Opportunities
The curriculum is broadened further by addressing gaps in opportunity through wider extracurricular opportunities beyond the classroom, developing a curriculum that is flexible, promotes equality of opportunity and is responsiveness to individual needs and aspirations. Such opportunities impact positively on student engagement, their wellbeing and help foster excellent habits of mind and attitudes to learning. Typically, students develop and discover their interests and talents through wider extracurricular opportunities including work experience; rock and pop concerts and other musical performances; computing competitions; mathematical enrichment challenges; theatre performances; gallery visits; fieldtrips; a wide variety of masterclasses from outside speakers; ‘top’ university trips and talks; gym clubs; Duke of Edinburgh’s Award; sporting activities and a large wealth of other initiatives.
