Description

The King's School is an independent Christian day school for children of nursery age up to GCSE (16 years). The school was established in Hemel Hempstead with 75 pupils in 1982, and moved to Harpenden during 1987. ​The current premises are situated in beautiful grounds on the outskirts of Harpenden. They have students with an age range from 4 to 16 years old, and preschool, Highfield Preschool, is located approximately 800m further along the road at The Oval.

Facilities

  • The Music department offers individual lessons on certain instruments including piano, violin, drums, saxophone, clarinet, recorder, guitar and voice.
  • They run a comprehensive PE programme, combining making the best use of on-site MUGA, field & hall with use of local facilities. Primary pupils learn to swim through Years 2-6 at the local pool.

Things to note

Music: Music is a key part of the school community and enjoyed by all, from grade 8 performers through to beginners. The Music department also run choirs and orchestra/ensemble in both Primary and Secondary departments. These groups perform at various events throughout the year, including awards events, carol services and summer concerts.

Sports: Activities change every half-term, covering a wide range of sports, progressing from basic fitness and skill development in the early years, through to more advanced techniques at GCSE levels. Primary pupils learn to swim through Years 2-6 at the local pool. Lunchtime sports clubs and inter-house matches are a regular feature at King's, along with after school clubs, such as multi-sport and table tennis. They run regular fixtures with other small schools in football and netball, plus occasional matches in other sports such as basketball and rounders. 

School Exchanges: The school has links with a Secondary school in Germany, and a small Secondary school in the village of L'Isle, in the French speaking region of Switzerland. Annual residential exchange visits, to and from these schools, aid Secondary students in their German and French language skills.

Residential Trips:

  • Year 9 are invited to take part in an outdoor & adventurous activities trip, usually in May, staying on the border of Wales.
  • Years 5 & 6 enjoy a bi-annual week long activities trip, staying at the Woodrow Centre in Buckinghamshire.
  • Year 10 Geography pupils usually take a two day trip to Hampshire, enjoying a mix of fieldwork, activities and fun at the beach in July.
  • Periodically they organise a ski trip for pupils from Years 4-11 during the Spring Term.

Admission Details

Primary School & Secondary SchoolThe King's School accepts applications from members of the Christian Community from across Christian denominations. They accept new applicants in Primary School, from the Foundation Class through to Year 6, and the Secondary School, from Year 7 through to Year 10. They do not accept new pupils into Year 11. Applicants for Year 10 will be considered on a case by case basis. If you would like to apply for a place at The King’s School for your child, please download and complete the Enquiry Form and email to kings.pa@thekingsschool.com. Mrs Hylton will arrange for you to meet with the Headteacher and have a tour of the school.
