The Town Mill

Description

The Town Mill this ancient watermill, set in the artisan quarter of Lyme Regis, was rescued from dereliction by local volunteers, through a ten-year restoration project and is now run as a small charitable trust.

Today, the unique and intriguing story of The Town Mill is recounted by our volunteer millers who mill stoneground wholemeal flour, and keep this special place open for everyone to enjoy. Nestled around a cobbled courtyard, the restored mill buildings house a working watermill and mill shop, art gallery, as well as a selection of creative, artisan businesses.

Entry is Free to The Town Mill – Self Guided Mill Viewing. If you are looking for Best place for day out with kids and families then this is the perfect destination offering fun, adventure, and unforgettable memories for everyone.

Features

Businesses that call The Town Mill home:

  • The Strawberry Tree: The Town Mill houses an authentic taste of Spain. Strawberry Tree is a restaurant & café, cooking school, event venue and shop – a family-run project centred around a love of sharing food.
  • Molesworth & Bird: Melanie Molesworth & Julia Bird friends for many years, they both worked as stylists for interiors magazines in London before heading out to the country; Julia to Cornwall, and Melanie to Dorset. Julia owns and runs the successful and stylish children’s shop BirdKids in Fowey, and Melanie styles photo shoots and runs The Arched House holiday rental in Lyme Regis.
  • Lyme Regis Brewery: A visit to The Town Mill is not complete without relaxing in the lovely cobbled courtyard with a traditional real ale brewed in Lyme Regis’ only microbrewery, in part of what was once, aptly, part of the ancient Malthouse, (first documented in the 18th century, where malt was roasted and then ground in the mill for local brewers).
  • Town Mill Pottery: The Town Mill pottery is situated in the heart of the Town Mill, bringing true artisan craftsmanship to the heart of the mill’s courtyard. Situated in what was the original stable block, the Town Mill Pottery retains much of its historic charm – no doubt because the art of pottery is a process even older than the mill itself and so lends itself to the space so beautifully.
  • Sew La Di Da Vintage: After a career in London working as a designer for high street fashion and later the bespoke market, Caroline moved to Lyme Regis where she opened a successful boutique. Here she designed and made vintage-inspired wedding dresses. Her success allowed her to move to a bigger boutique where she stocked vintage frocks alongside her own work.
  • Jewellery by Lucy Campbell: Silversmith and jeweller, Lucy Campbell, takes inspiration from the coastal landscape around Lyme Regis and the stunning Jurassic Coast. Delicate, circular forms are a recurrent theme, with shells, fossils and other seashore and organic textures appearing throughout her jewellery collection. Her work has a contemporary handmade look, with the ‘maker’s mark’ left beautifully visible. Lucy’s collections involve techniques such as forging, casting, etching, stone-setting and ‘precious metal clay’ and includes rings, bangles, bracelets, cuffs, earrings, studs, necklaces, pendants and cufflinks.
  • Inside out your space: OUR DREAMS. OUR DESIGNS. A NEW SPACE. At inside out we believe in relationships – with eachother, with the world around us. We’re all about togetherness. Because together we’re better. This is as true for the people in our lives, as it is for the spaces we inhabit. The more we care, nurture and respect, the more we get in return, from each other, from our physical surroundings.
  • Bakehouse Studio Hire: The Bakehouse Studio is a large room on the first floor with easy access across to the water wheel. It is available for hire for school visits, meetings, classes and workshops, lectures, art and craft courses and other functions.
