Description

The Eton Treasure Trail is a self-guided treasure hunt adventure set around the historic town of Eton. It offers a fun and interactive way to explore Eton College, the High Street and riverside sights with family and friends. This walking Trail combines sightseeing with clue-solving for an exciting day out.

The story follows Old Etonian Bert E Worcester, who lost his very fat wallet after celebrating a rowing victory at Dorney Lake. One of his ‘mates’ hid it as a prank, leaving Bert unable to pay his taxi fare and even landing him in the police station. As you follow the 2.3-mile circular route from Romney Lock car park, you’ll solve sneaky clues on buildings, permanent features and monuments to help find the hidden wallet and complete the mission.

The Treasure Trail costs £9.99 per Trail, which covers the whole group playing together. The same Trail can also be used for birthday parties, working best in small teams of around 4–5 people, with adult support recommended for younger children.

The Eton Treasure Trail is ideal for families, friends and visitors wanting to discover more about Eton in a unique way. It blends history, teamwork and problem-solving while taking in views of the Thames and the spectacular sights of Eton College. With its engaging storyline and flexible pace, it turns a simple walk into a memorable treasure hunt experience.

Features

Bert's Lost Wallet - A Tale of Mischief and Misfortune

  • Old Etonian, Bert E Worcester, had been celebrating the victory of the Eton College rowing team at Dorney Lake, with fellow Old Etonians. A little the worse for wear, Bert dropped his wallet as he got into a taxi to go home.
  • The wallet, complete with bank cards, driver's license, passport, flat keys, car keys and his mobile phone (yes, it was a very fat wallet!), was picked up by one of his so-called 'mates', who decided to hide it as a prank!
  • Bert incurred the anger of the taxi driver for not being able to pay the fare and then got stuck trying to climb through a window into his flat. Spotted by a passing patrol car and unable to produce any ID or contact phone numbers, Bert was taken to the police station!

Birthday Party Details

Want a birthday that’s actually fun (and doesn’t involve everyone just sitting around)? A Treasure Trail is an easy, ready-to-go adventure that gets people outside, exploring and laughing together. Our pre-written Trails are suitable for children and adults aged 6+, and work best in small teams of around 4–5 people. Everyone follows the route, cracks the clues, and solves the mystery as they go.

How a Treasure Trail birthday works

  • Pick a location (choose somewhere local, or make it part of a day out).
  • Split into teams (4–5 per team works best).
  • Set the mission (a quick briefing + team names instantly boosts excitement).
  • Start times (stagger teams by 2–5 minutes to avoid copying).
  • Finish with prizes (more on that below!).

Children’s birthday parties: what to know

  • We get asked a lot whether Trails work for children’s parties.
  • Standard Trails are designed for ages 6+, but at that age they’re best enjoyed as a family group or mixed adult/child team, because the directions and clue-solving usually need grown-up support.
  • If you’ve got 20 energetic 6-year-olds and one adult, a standard Trail probably isn’t the right fit.
  • For older children (often 9/10+, depending on the group), small teams can work really well, but they’ll still need adult supervision, especially near roads and crossings.

Ready to plan your birthday Trail?

  • Pick a location, choose your Trail, and you’re good to go.
  • If you’d like help choosing a Trail that suits your group size, ages, and timings, get in touch and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Visit the website for more information.

Trails are self-guided and can be instantly downloaded from the Treasure Trail website. Follow the Trail, solve the clues and see the sights on any day of your choosing.
