Description

Stockbridge Down gently rises to a peak in the landscape of the Test Valley. The top offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The Down offers a mix of habitats that are hugely beneficial to local wildlife. Areas of open grassland, scrub and partially wooded margins characterise the landscape.

Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it’s particularly important for butterflies. More than half of the UK’s species thrive on wildflowers in spring and summer. In the colder months, over-wintering birds find food and shelter here. Steeped in history, Stockbridge Down is also important for archaeology. 14 Scheduled Ancient Monuments can be found among the grassland, including Bronze Age burial mounds.
