St Mary's, accessible via a short causeway, is a popular part-time island with rich history. The Lighthouse, built in 1898, served until 1984 when modern navigational techniques made it no longer needed. Now, it and the former keepers' cottages operate as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council. The Nature Reserve includes rock pools, clifftop grassland, a beach, and new wetland habitats.

Visitors can climb 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse for spectacular views of the North East coast. You can also use a video facility at ground level that allows you to experience the same views, live and in colour. Other exhibits detail the Lighthouse's history and local wildlife of St Mary's Nature Reserve.

Features

Things to do on the island: St Mary’s Island is a popular tourist attraction. The part time island has all the charm of a miniature island with a visitor centre and lighthouse with stunning coastal views during tidal access. Visitors can climb the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse and explore the newly refurbished visitor centre that featuring new exhibitions and activities that shine a light on its rich history and local wildlife. These include: 

  • An indoor wildlife hide with HD cameras offering close-up views of seals and birds
  • A time-lapse display showing tidal movements and views from the tower
  • New exhibitions exploring the island’s history, geology, and wildlife
  • An interactive vessel finder to identify and track passing ships in real time
  • A children’s area called the Little Lighthouse Keepers’ zone, with themed toys, a mini play-lighthouse and submarine
  • A virtual lighthouse keeper projection sharing stories of life on the island and day-to-day lighthouse operations
  • Lots of visitors come to see the seals and birds on the reserve. There are wetlands on the wider reserve as well as cliff top grasslands and beaches to visit. 

Facilities

  • Parking: There are large pay and display car parks on the mainland.
  • Food & Drinks: During opening times the gift shop sells takeaway hot drinks and snacks as well as souvenirs and gifts.
  • Toilets: There is public toilets.
  • Dogs: Dogs are permitted on the island and causeway on leads, the beaches are dog friendly in the reserve but please avoid wildlife disturbance. 

What to see

Events: 

  • School and group visits: Most popular offer is full day visits (4hrs+) including lunch time and 3 or more activities from the following, depending on tides: rockpooling, lighthouse visit, lighthouse keeper lives workshop, sand art, fossil hunting, investigating coasts, wildlife talk, seal and bird watching, meadow minibeasts. 
  • Educational visits: Educational visits are based in the conference room where possible, with one group per day using the room as a base for teaching activities and lunch space, led by the education staff team. Please email us in advance for availability, group discount costs and more information to support your trip planning, please contact us if you want to ask for something more bespoke. At busy summer times we can offer outside activity led days.For groups wanting to lead their own trip and have tower only admission, we offer a group discount of £2.80 per child.
  • Private rockpooling and fossil hunting sessions: Ideal for birthday parties, or a treat with a difference, we offer rockpooling or fossil hunting sessions led by an education officer who will teach you about the amazing creatures/fossils your group find. Or challenge your party guests to climb the lighthouse. £65 each activity, nets and bucket hire included, for up to 30 guests, recommended for 5yrs+ or adults.

  • Getting Here: The Lighthouse is a major landmark situated north of Whitley Bay, Tyne & Wear. Follow the brown tourist signs from the Whitley Bay turn-off on the A19 or from the end of the A1058 out of Newcastle.
  • Metro: The Metro system can take you as far as Whitley Bay, where you will need to take a short walk from the Metro Station to Park Avenue. The No. 308 and 309 ‘Blyth’ buses travels every 15 minutes from here. Get off at Whitley Bay Cemetery for the island.
  • Parking: There are large pay and display car parks on the mainland.
