Description

Smithills Hall is one of the oldest and best-preserved manor houses in the North West of England, set in beautiful countryside on the edge of the West Pennine Moors in Bolton. With over 700 years of history, the Hall offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into medieval life and the families who lived there. It is a calm, educational, and family-friendly heritage attraction.

The historic buildings include the original 14th-century Medieval Hall, later Tudor and Victorian wings, and a private consecrated chapel believed to date back to AD 792. Visitors can explore the free Timeline Exhibition, which tells the story of Smithills Hall from 1335 to the present day, and join guided tours led by knowledgeable volunteers from the Friends of Smithills Hall. The grounds also connect to Smithills Country Park, making it ideal for combining history with outdoor walks.

Entry to Smithills Hall and the exhibition is free, while guided tours cost £5 for adults and £4 for concessions. Free parking is available on-site, and the café serves homemade, locally sourced food including sandwiches, cakes, and grab-and-go options.
