Features

  • The Castle: Skipton Castle is one of the most complete and well preserved medieval castles in England. Fully roofed and with an enchanting early Tudor courtyard the stout towers of the gatehouse only hint at the splendour which is revealed as the visitor enters the castle grounds. Facing the gatehouse there is a large tower, originally the watchtower - the most important feature of the castle's defences. To its left  is the present entrance to the inner core of the stronghold.
  • 3D Castle Plan: The Ancient Chapel of St John the Evangelist, Skipton Castle, Yorkshire. It may be impossible to date the foundation of the Chapel precisely but it is likely to be of 13th century origin, some years after the reign of King John and Magna Carta of 1215. It may well have been during the pontificate of Pope John XXI (1276-1320). That it was dedicated to St. John the Evangelist from earliest times is undoubted and is recorded in an existing Inquistion of 1315.
  • Activities for You to Do at Home: See how life would have been in the principal rooms of the castle over 500 years ago. Print your own colour pictures. • Skipton Castle's Conference Facilities: One of the best-preserved and most complete medieval castles in England, offering a memorable and impressive venue. Ideally suited for small to medium sized functions. Set in beautiful peaceful grounds above the bustling market town of Skipton. Open all year, except 23rd, 24th & 25th December.
  • Skipton Castle Woods: For nearly a thousand years Skipton Castle Woods provided fuel, building materials and food to the castle it surrounds. And the waterways that run through it gave power to local wool, corn and saw mills across two centuries.
