Restormel Castle The huge and almost perfectly circular keep of Restormel Castle stands on a high and deeply ditched mound overlooking the river Fowey. Restormel was begun in the later 13th century, but reached its greatest splendour under Edward the Black Prince.

You can trace the great hall and other buildings the Black Prince used during his two long visits to the castle and its surrounding deer park. Climb the steps to stroll round the battlements and take in great views over the countryside. Restormel makes a great picnic spot and an excellent walking base for exploring the Fowey valley.

Explore the wall walk: One of Restormel Castle's highlights is the wall walk around the inside of the inner ward. Climb up the stone staircase from the courtyard and you will be rewarded with stunning views across the surrounding countryside. Built to protect against attackers, Restormel Castle walls now offer tranquil views across the Fowey valley – and the chance to imagine castle life bustling below you centuries ago.
Spot flowers and Wildlife: Restormel Castle and grounds are a peaceful and beautiful place to enjoy a stroll. Take in the stunning views and maybe a enjoy picnic looking out over what was originally a large deer park. In spring, primroses and daffodils cover the mound; rhododendrons flower in summer. The surrounding woodland is home to the 'Black Pheasant' – see if you can spot him in autumn. The grounds are also a great place for children run, play and let off steam.
Visit a once-grand royal castle: Edward of Woodstock, or the Black Prince was given the newly created title of Duke of Cornwall in 1337 along with a large estate which included the castle and manor of Restormel, parkland and town of Lostwithiel. He visited the castle twice, once in summer 1354 and then over Christmas in 1362.
Restormel Walking Trail: Download our free walking trail before your visit and meander through the beautiful Fowey valley. Lasting approximately 45 minutes, the trail links Restormel Castle with the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery.

Road Access: Restormel Castle is 1 ½ miles north of Lostwithiel, off the A390.
Bus Access: The nearest bus stop to Restormel Castle is The Royal Talbot in Lostwithiel. The castle is then a 1.1mile / 1.8km walk along a minor road. Service 28 (or 428) runs from St Austell Bus Station to Lostwithiel Royal Talbot. Operating times vary, see website for details. There are regular bus connections at St Austell from Fowey, Mevagissey, Newquay and Truro. Travel Cornwall Bus 482 runs on Wednesdays only from Polperro and Looe. This bus offers a limited stay in Lostwithiel of approx. 2.5 hours.
Train Access: The nearest station is Lostwithiel, which is approximately 1 1⁄2 miles 2 km from Restormel Castle. For train times and tickets, visit the Great Western Railway website.
