Welcome to Ragged School Museum, discover the story of London’s largest Victorian Ragged School, opened by Dr Barnardo in 1877. For thirty years the school served some of the poorest children in the Victorian East End.

Find us on the Regent’s Canal by Mile End Park our former warehouses have undergone major refurbishment funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. All floors are accessible by lift and our atmospheric Ragged Café opens onto the Canal towpath.

Half Term - Free Family Activities: Free Family Activities this half term, Celebrate Chinese New Year.
Forgotten Tale: Forgotten Tale is an immersive installation by the artist Clarisse d’Arcimoles who meticulously recreated a life size, three-dimensional black and white photograph of a Spitalfields home in 1902. The work invites visitors to literally step into the picture frame; to be transported back to the Victorian era and to contemplate the circumstances and long forgotten stories of the picture’s subjects in a sensory environment.
Key Stage 1: We offer Victorian Lessons to Key Stage 1 classes. One of our actors will conduct the session, meeting the children first out of character, before transforming into the very strict “Miss Perkins”! The session involves roleplay, as your class will be expected to behave like good Ragged School children. The session will end with a de-brief, led by our actor, where there will be time for discussion and questions. This session is designed to be engaging and fun, rather than frightening, and we take care when working with younger visitors who may be of a sensitive disposition.
Key Stage 2: Our KS2 programme includes our fantastic Victorian Lesson and a session in our Victorian East End Kitchen where children explore and handle historical artefacts. Led by our “Victorian teacher,” Miss Perkins, the Victorian Lesson takes place in our original and distinctive Victorian Classroom. Pupils will be transported back to the 1880s and experience first-hand what Victorian schooling was really like!
Our Programme: Our Schools Programme has been developed to provide children with an exciting way of engaging their young minds with history, and to encourage them to use their imaginations and creative thinking. Through roleplay and object handling sessions, your pupils will be given the opportunity to explore and discover what life would have been like for children their age in the Victorian Era.
Victorian classroom: At the heart of the Ragged School Museum is our unique classroom, where each year some 16,000 children come to experience a glimpse of Victorian life. The room has been recreated in one of Dr Barnardo’s original classrooms, restored as it was in the 1870s when the great social reformer, newly arrived from Dublin, set up his free school for poor children in the East End of London.

Bus: There are numerous bus routes you can take to the museum. These include 277, D6 & D7 (stop at Eric St, head through the park), 25 (Regents Canal, head through park), 339 (Harford St, head east up Ben Jonson Rd), 323 (Bow Common Lane, head through park) and 309 (Copperfield Rd, just over the road!).
Train: The nearest rail stations are Liverpool St and Stratford. You will need to take the tube or a bus to continue on to us.
Bike: Most of us are cyclists at the museum, so we encourage people to get on their bikes! There are Bike Hire stations on Aston St, Harford St and Mile End Rd. There are cycle racks behind the museum, on the Regent’s Canal towpath.
DLR: The nearest DLR station is Limehouse. The museum can be reached by heading north on the Regent’s Canal towpath.
Tube: The nearest tube station is Mile End (Central, District and Hammersmith & City lines). On leaving the station, turn left and walk to the crossroads. Cross over towards the bridge and, before the bridge, turn left and head through the park.
