What to see

Gardens
Sweeping lawns, secret doorways and beds filled with colour and fragrance. The gardens at Preston Manor are full of unexpected pleasures. When Charles and Ellen Thomas-Stanford moved to Preston Manor in 1905, the gardens were in need of care and attention. Instead of changing the layout, they replanted the garden with shrubs and flowers, preserving its old-fashioned character. Today, a group of volunteers cares for the charming walled garden, with its laburnum arch, carefully trained fruit trees and flowers that change with the seasons.

Entrace Hall
Fine furniture and family portraits greet visitors to Preston Manor, in a spacious Entrance Hall that was designed to make an impression. Once part of the 18th-century manor house, Preston Manor’s Entrance Hall was remodelled and enlarged in 1905.

Cleves Room
With its decorative walls and intriguing history, the Cleves Room is best known for a séance held there in the 1890s. This small room leading off the Entrance Hall is named after Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of Henry VIII. It’s possible that she stayed here on her way to a convent in nearby Falmer. In a further connection, a copy of a Holbein portrait of her probably hung here in the 19th century.

Drawing Room
Elegant French and English furniture, opulent, gilt-framed mirrors and views over the park. The Drawing Room at Preston Manor was a luxurious retreat for the Lady of the House. This graceful room was used to entertain guests before and after dinner. A formal reception room with views over Preston Park, it has carved, polished wood doors and decorative ceiling and cornices. Luxurious but also comfortable – it was a place for the lady of the house to spend time with friends, or to do some reading or sewing in the afternoon or evening.
