Description
The Pioneer Club is a youth and community charity based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, serving as both a live music venue and home to the UK’s oldest indoor skatepark. Originally founded in 1941 for evacuees during World War Two, The Pioneer Club remains a safe haven in the community with a focus on youth culture across skate, music, dance and the arts. Built by skateboarders with a DIY ethos including retired professional skateboarder Rodney Clarke, the skatepark has developed into a permanent fixture hosting quarterly skate jams, over-30s nights, and beginner evenings.
The skatepark offers regular public sessions open to all ages from 5 to 60, with professional coaching available at Sunday Skate School featuring Death skateboarder Charlie Spelzini. Activities include skate demos, various specialized sessions catering to different skill levels and age groups, plus venue hire options for events from small gatherings to large-scale celebrations. The facility also provides versatile spaces with catering options ranging from casual snacks to full meals for conferences, workshops, and private affairs.
Session passes are available with options including 10 classes for £67.50, 15 classes for £95.50, and 25 classes for £150.00. Birthday parties offer exclusive skatepark access for up to 30 people with packages starting at £275 for up to 15 children.
Operating throughout the week with varying hours from 10am-5:30pm on weekends and extended weekday sessions, The Pioneer Club provides an authentic skateboarding experience in the UK’s oldest indoor skatepark. Whether you’re a complete beginner or experienced skater, the facility offers professional coaching, community events, and private hire options in a historic venue that has championed youth culture for decades.
