Paycocke's House and Garden stunning woodcarving and elaborate panelling made this wealthy merchant's house a medieval des res built to impress. Built around 1500 for Thomas Paycocke, the house is a grand example of the wealth generated in East Anglia by the cloth trade in the 16th century.

Discover what happened to Thomas' house through hundreds of years of history as you piece together its timber framed secrets and the fascinating story of its riches to rags decline and Edwardian 20-year restoration. Our volunteers have worked similar green-fingered miracles restoring our cottage garden, a hidden arts & crafts gem with surprising industrial roots.

Price starts from £11.00 for Adults(18 years and over), £5.50 for Children(5-17 & under 5s free) and £27.50 for Family(2 Adults and up to 3 children).   • Explore Paycocke's garden: The tranquil Arts and Crafts-style tiered cottage garden, created during the renovation of Paycocke's, is a hidden gem. Based on the original design-work of Miriam Noel who lived at Paycocke's during its restoration, the layout includes space to enjoy our tea-room offerings, a croquet lawn and a new wildflower garden.

  • Parking: Visitors are advised to park in the village car park in Stoneham Street, just a few minutes' walk away. (Free for two hours).
  • Toilet: Accessible toilet with baby changing facilities is located near garden entrance and toilet on first floor of the house.
  • Dogs allowed: Dogs allowed in the garden on a lead.

The history of Paycocke's: From medieval records it's thought earlier buildings may once have stood on the West Street site of Paycocke’s before the current building was constructed in 1509, the same year Henry VIII acceded to the throne.
