Description

London Mithraeum is a unique cultural and archaeological site located in the heart of the City of London. Built on the site of Bloomberg’s European headquarters, it returns the Roman Temple of Mithras to its original location near the ancient River Walbrook. This fascinating attraction brings nearly 2,000 years of London’s history back to life.

Visitors can experience the reconstructed Temple of Mithras through an immersive, multi-sensory display featuring atmospheric lighting, sound and haze effects that recreate Roman London around AD 240. The site also showcases hundreds of Roman artefacts discovered during major excavations, including pottery, tools and early written documents. In addition, Bloomberg SPACE presents contemporary art installations inspired by the temple’s history, offering a modern perspective on this important archaeological discovery.

London Mithraeum is free to visit, making it an accessible attraction for all. Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10am–6pm, Sunday 12pm–5pm, with extended hours on the first Thursday of each month until 8pm.

With its combination of ancient history, immersive storytelling and contemporary art, London Mithraeum offers a memorable and educational experience. It’s an ideal stop for history lovers, culture enthusiasts and anyone curious about Roman London hidden beneath the modern city.

Features

  • Temple of Mithras: See the past brought vividly to life in the Temple of Mithras with an immersive, multi-sensory experience. See and experience the reconstructed remains of the Temple of Mithras. This is a faithful recreation of the ruin that was discovered in 1954 by renowned archaeologist Professor W.F. Grimes during the excavations carried out following the Blitz in 1941. The temple has been restored to capture the mystery and intrigue of the Roman cult of Mithras, who used to meet on this site. Haze, light and the sound of footsteps, chanting and secret whispers will transport you back to London AD 240.
  • Artefacts: Discover over 600 objects left or lost by the first Londoners, including the earliest recorded written document from Britain. The archaeological excavation undertaken between 2012 and 2014 was one of the most extensive ever to have taken place in London, and revealed new evidence of the area’s Roman origins. More than 14,000 individual artefacts were recovered, including 63,000 sherds of Roman pottery and three tonnes of animal bone, providing evidence of trade, consumption, food and industry.
  • Bloomberg SPACE: Inspired by the site’s Roman temple of Mithras, Room with All Existing Words by Mark Manders will explore how our understanding of the past is shaped from artefacts and fragments that survive. London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE showcases a series of contemporary art commissions, responding to and bringing fresh perspective to the history of the site. Our current installation, Room with All Existing Words, is the work of Dutch artist Mark Manders. For more than three decades, Manders has developed what he describes as a ‘self-portrait as a building’: a collection of sculptures, objects, and texts that form a cohesive yet imagined world reflecting his inner thinking.
