Glenesk Folk Museum is a museum located in the Glen Esk valley, in Tarfside, Angus, Scotland. It is about 9 miles north of the village of Edzell. It is housed in a former shooting lodge, known as 'The Retreat', which used to belong to the Earls of Dalhousie.

During your visit you can expect to see our stunning collection of farming equipment, Victorian textiles, and recreations of family life plus much more. Glenesk Folk Museum was established by local school teacher and historian, Greta Michie in 1955 and is dedicated to preserving the past, present, and future of Scottish rural life.

Features

Grounds: Nestled among the hills of Glenesk, the museum is a perfect place to come to enjoy nature and plan your next adventure. We have outdoor seating around the building to sit and look out on the amazing views and enjoy the wee burn. If you're in the mood for exercise you can enjoy our short (quarter of a mile) woodland walk and nature trail that takes you around the grounds and through our wild and managed gardens. Heritage continues throughout the grounds, as you will see our collection of ploughs, quern and mill stones, and a beautiful sundial.
Craft Workshops: Welcome to our workshops and Crafternoon Teas. If there is something you would like to see added to our list, let us know.

  • Parking: The car park is spacious and easy to manoeuvre. There is sufficient space for mini vans and a lower area for coach parking. Visitors can be dropped off at the door of the building and the whole building is wheelchair accessible including a lift to reach the upper floor. The museum can provide a wheelchair, which can be reserved prior to your visit to avoid disappointment.
  • Food & Drinks: Enjoy a range of hot and cold food including lunches and afternoon teas, and a delicious selection of home baked cakes and sweet treats. 
  • Dogs: Well behaved dogs are very welcome in the museum, cafe, shop and grounds.

  • Directions: Glenesk Folk Museum is just 10 miles north of Edzell. Take the turn off the B966 Edzell Fettercairn road by The Burn, travelling towards Tarfside and Loch Lee. The museum is 9 miles up the glen road, housed in a large white building on your right, a quarter of a mile before Tarfside.
