Framlingham Castle, Discover the stories of medieval aristocrats, a Tudor queen and Georgian poorhouse children at Framlingham Castle. Follow the wall-top walk round Framlingham’s defences and you can see 800 years of history from above.

There are helpful panels with info about the castle’s surroundings – the pretty market town, the castle’s outer earthworks and the Mere. Don’t forget to look up at the tall Tudor chimneys which crown some of the towers! Each one has a different brick design. Visit, and you can explore the exhibition tracing the castle’s intriguing stories. There’s also a free audio guide, and families can get hands-on with costumes and interactive games.

  • Walk the wall: Embark on a journey of discovery around the magnificent wall walk. At a spectacular 10.5 metres high and 2.3 metres thick, this curtain wall has stood for more than 800 years. Listen to the free audio guide (one for adults; another, one for kids) as you go. Look down if you dare.
  • Visit the Workhouse: Take a look inside Framlingham's workhouse, the only building remaining inside the castle walls today. Built around the shell of the castle's medieval great hall, the workhouse provided works and lodging for the town's paupers from the 17th to the 19th century.
  • Explore the exhibition: Discover the stories of Framlingham Castle in the exhibition on the reinstated mezzanine level in the Workhouse. Get to know the castle's varied owners in the exhibition walkthrough. Former residents included the famous Howard family and Mary Tudor. Mary was proclaimed Queen of England at Framlingham castle in 1553.

There is no coach parking available on site and the car park cannot accommodate large vehicles. If this car park is full, there are three pay-and-display car parks in Framlingham town.

  • Toilets: Toilets available on site, and an accessible toilet is located 300m from the site entrance, along a tarmac surface.
