Congleton Museum is a local museum in Congleton, Cheshire, northwest England, covering the history of the town of Congleton, which is situated on the banks of the River Dane. Congleton Museum Trust was established in 1985 by a group of people interested in local history.

The museums remit covers the pre-historic period to the present day, most items in the collection relate to Congleton and the surrounding areas. With an extensive photograph archive capturing moments in time in Congleton throughout the decades, and six hoards containing over 13,000 coins.

  • Collections: The museums remit covers the pre-historic period to the present day, most items in the collection relate to Congleton and the surrounding areas. With an extensive photograph archive capturing moments in time in Congleton throughout the decades, and six hoards containing over 13,000 coins.   • Congleton Charters: Initially legal documents, these charters are also works of art. The most decorative is the 1625 charter of James I.
  • Photograph Archive: An extensive archive containing images of Congleton throughout time.
  • Bronze Age: The Bronze Age was a period in history from approximately 3300 BC to 1200 BC. This period is characterised by the use of bronze to make tools and weapons.
  • Civil War: From a cannon ball stuck inside a stone from Biddulph Old Hall, to buried treasure found in Priesty Fields, Congleton was a prominent during the Civil War Period.
  • Roman Cheshire: The museums holds four Roman hoards in it’s collection, the Malpas, Peover, Poole and Knutsford Hoards. These combined make the Cheshire Hoard. As well as coins, the museum has many artefacts from Roman Cheshire, such as jewellery and brooches.

  • By Car: Follow the brown museum signs and those for Congleton Town Centre from all main roads A534, A34 and A54.
  • By Train: Congleton train station is in Hightown, about a twenty minutes’ walk to the museum. You can catch the number 94 bus outside the train station which stops at Congleton bus station. 
  • By Bus: Congleton bus station is opposite Morrisons supermarket and it’s a two-minutes’ walk to the museum along the walkway and past Congleton Library. 38 Crewe to Macclesfield (Hourly service). 94 Congleton to Newcastle under Lyme (Hourly service). 42 Crewe – Middlewich – Congleton (Hourly service).
  • By Foot: Congleton Museum is located in Congleton town centre, behind the town hall. There are museum street post signs from the Elizabeth statue on Bridge Street to the museum. Congleton Museum, Market Square, Congleton CW12 1ET.
