Have a go at building a Norman archway, dressing as an Iron Age Briton, steering a Roman chariot or firing our replica ballista at the east wall. 

Our guide will take you down through 2,000 years of history to the Roman Vaults, the foundations of the Temple of Claudius. You will then travel up the Great Stairs before seeing the unrivalled view of Colchester from the Castle roof.

  • The Building: See the stonework of the largest Norman keep in Europe and, using our interactive tablet, imagine how it would have looked. Gaze into the depths of the well, marvel at the Chapel or brave the prisons!
  • The Collections: Some of the most important historical finds in Britain can be found in Colchester Castle, from Celtic coin hoards to Roman statues and mosaics, medieval paintings to civil war armour. Look out for the famous Sheepen Cauldron, a huge and mysterious vessel from the Bronze Age, and the hastily hidden Fenwick Hoard of silver and gold jewellery from Roman Britain.
  • The Roman Vaults + Castle Roof: Take one of our guided tours to discover even more of Colchester Castle. Head down into the Roman Vaults, the foundations of the Temple of Claudius, before ascending the Great Stairs to see a stunning view of Colchester from the Castle roof.
  • Replica Ballista: Created by Len Morgan and brought to life by Motion Mapping, enjoy a bit of target practice. Support our work whilst firing at the Castle wall, as proceeds from this incredible interactive go to the Colchester Museums Development Foundation.

Parking: Parking is available in the nearby Priory Street and Britannia car parks, which are just a few minutes from Colchester Castle, Hollytrees Museum and Natural History Museum.

  • Murder Mystery: A Knight to Remember: 27/09/2025. Colchester Castle, Step into the shadowy world of courtly intrigue and noble unrest for an evening of scandal, scheming, and murder. Set within the dramatic surroundings of Colchester Castle, the largest Norman keep in Europe, this immersive event promises a night to remember.
  • Mini Museum Explorers: 30/09/2025. Hollytrees Museum, Sessions are at 10 – 11 am and 11:15 am – 12:15 pm. Designed for children aged 2 1/2 to 4, along with their parents, grandparents, and carers, these monthly sessions offer an immersive journey of exploration and discovery. The September session will focus on the theme of Wings and Wonders.

Our birthday party packages are aimed at children aged 5-11.
Work with a member of our team to choose the best themed party for your child. 
Packages include a bespoke tour, getting messy with some Castle arts and crafts and a private space for you to host games and pass out the birthday cake.
All you’ll need to do is bring your own food and drink and get ready for heaps of Castle kids fun!

  • By Car: Sat Nav – please use CO1 1UG. To reach Colchester by road, exit the A12 at junction 27 and follow the signs to the city centre. There are spaces for disabled badge holders by Castle Park in Museum Street, and places in the High Street.
  • Train: Colchester is just 58 minutes on the main train line from London or Norwich. Arriving at Colchester Main station, the museums are just a 20 minute walk or a short bus ride to the city centre.
  • By Bus: The museums are a 10 minute walk from the main bus station on Osborne Street.
  • By Bicycle: You can plan your journey by visiting cyclestreets.net. Bike racks can be found outside the Castle Park gates by Museum Street and along Colchester High Street.
  • Parking: Parking is available in the nearby Priory Street and Britannia car parks, which are just a few minutes from Colchester Castle, Hollytrees Museum and Natural History Museum.
