Claymills Victorian Pumping Station

Claymills Victorian Pumping Station, Meadow Lane, Burton-on-Trent, UK
1-99 Years

Description

Claymills Pumping Station is a restored Victorian sewage pumping station on the north side of Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England DE13 0DA. It was designed by James Mansergh and used to pump sewage to the sewage farm at Egginton. The main pumping plant consists of four Woolf compound rotative beam engines.

We have four working beam engines by Gimson of Leicester 1885, Steam driven workshop, Forge and a 1930's dynamo house with early (1890's) Crompton dynamo driven by a Buxton and Thornley steam engine. In total, we have 33 original steam engines supplied from two of our five boilers made by Thompson's 1936-37.

  • Online Tour: To give you a quick visit to the museum to show what we have in our care and the activities that volunteers can get up to!
  • Archive: This is a database engine with scanned images of archival information about and from Claymills and the Burton upon Trent area. The site has its own dedicated search engine which just requires key words to search. It provides access to all the pictures and documents that have been scanned so far (over 6,000 at the last count). As this is a long term project it was decided to publish work done so far. This facility has been rewritten during 2020. (comments please).
  • Steaming days: People sometimes wonder what's the difference between a Steaming Weekend, and static viewing. Static viewing you can do any time our double gates are open; we'll be happy to welcome you, let you wander round or give you a guided tour, but you won't see the thing that makes Claymills come alive; the engines working.
